Taking a look at one move that could make the Minnesota Vikings even better as they head into the bye week.
The Minnesota Vikings are off to a 5-0 start and are heading into the bye week following a solid 23-13 win over the New Orleans Saints on Sunday afternoon. While the Vikings are still undefeated, there are still some things this team does need to improve on, such as blocking a lot more consistently up front.
So far this season, Minnesota has allowed 15 sacks which is the fourth most in the entire NFL and definitely not a place that this offense wants to be. Part of the reason for some of issues on the offensive line is the fact that health has been a fairly big issue.
On that note, Bleacher Report NFL analyst Alex Kay wrote a piece on 1 trade that could put the NFL's best teams over the top after Week 5, and for the Vikings, that move involved an offensive lineman.
Specifically, Kay proposed that the Vikings should trade away a 2027 fifth round pick to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and in return they would acquire guard Ben Bredeson as well as a 2027 seventh round pick.
This could be an interesting move for the Vikings, as starting guard Donovan Jackson was ruled out for the rest of the season due to a meniscus tear.
Following the designation for Jackson, Minnesota went to guard Joe Huber, but to this point, he has really struggled, as according to PFF, he has allowed three pressures, one quarterback hit, and has been called for two penalties on 142 offensive snaps.
If the Vikings are going to continue to stack wins, and become a more productive offense, they will need much better play on the interior of the offensive line, which is a key reason why Kay has suggested that Minnesota should acquire Bredeson.
Now, Bredeson is currently starting for Buccaneers, but if the Vikings were able to convince Tampa Bay to trade away Bredeson that could be huge for Minnesota.
Thus far, Bredeson has had some issues, as according to Pro Football Focus, he has allowed 10 pressures, three quarterback hits, two sacks, and has committed four penalties on 325 offensive snaps.
While Bredeson has definitely had some problems this season, it is possible that a change of scenery could benefit him, as blocking for a mobile quarterback like Kyler Murray could help him be more effective and also utilize more run blocking rather than pass blocking.
Additionally, Bredeson is a very experienced player as he has started 58 games over the past six seasons through playing for the Buccaneers as well as the New York Giants, and if the Vikings do acquire Bredeson, he would join his brother Max Bredeson, who currently plays fullback for Minnesota.
So, as the Vikings move through the bye week, it will be interesting to see if they do make a move for a player like Bredeson, because if they do, he may provide the experience they need to help this offense continue trending in the right direction and build off the strong 5-0 start.
