Would the Vikings Benefit From Making a Trade to Acquire Josh Downs?

Taking a look at if the Minnesota Vikings would benefit from making a trade to acquire Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Josh Downs.

The Minnesota Vikings are off to a 6-0 start, however, it has not been perfect, as the offense has really struggled, especially in the passing game, with quarterback Kyler Murray having issues being able to consistently move the ball through the air.

With that said, the trade deadline is approaching, and the Vikings may want to consider adding some more playmaking on offense, whether it be at running back, wide receiver, or tight end.

Focusing on wide receiver, Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Josh Downs has requested a trade, per ESPN senior NFL reporter Jeremy Fowler, which could be an option for Minnesota and does bring up one question. Would the Vikings benefit from making a trade to acquire Josh Downs?

Based on the struggles that this offense has when it comes to an explosive passing game, it definitely does seem like the Vikings would benefit from having a player like Downs at the receiver position.

It is important to note that Minnesota has also been linked to being a candidate to trade for Downs' teammate, running back Jonathan Taylor, which could also be an interesting move if the Vikings are willing to be very aggressive at the deadline.

When it comes to how Downs would benefit the Vikings, it is really his ability to provide a consistent threat over the middle and being able to help move the chains on a normal basis. So far this season, the Vikings have had a lot of issues sustaining drives, and as a result of that, drives have stalled and have led to lots of punts and field goals from kicker Will Reichard when they could have converted those into touchdowns.

Looking at Downs, to this point in 2026 he has tallied 26 receptions for 307 yards, zero touchdowns, and 18 first downs on 45 targets.

Standing at 5-9 and 171 pounds, Downs is not necessarily a physically imposing receiver, but instead, he is a shifty slot receiver who could fit perfectly into this offense as Minnesota already has wide receivers Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison on the perimeter, as well as tight end T.J. Hockenson to take on the physical aspect of the passing game.

For Downs, he could be used to beat man coverage with his speed and could sit in zones and then create extra yards after the catch, which could be very beneficial for this Vikings offense as they need someone to be able to add more explosion and consistency, and Downs could be perfect for that role.

Now focusing on what Downs would cost in a trade, there is not a clear asking price at this point, but it is probably safe to assume that it would be around a second or third round pick and with Downs wanting to leave the Colts, it is possible that Indianapolis may have to settle for closer to a third or maybe even a fourth as they will want to get something for him and other teams know he does not want to stay with the Colts.

Based on that, it will be interesting to see if the Vikings are interested in trading for Downs, because if they can negotiate a trade package that makes sense, Downs could be the perfect piece for this offense and potentially help Murray and the Vikings move the ball a lot more consistently.

So, with the trade deadline approaching, it will be interesting to see if the Vikings do want to pursue a player like Downs to add to their offense because if they do, this offense may be able to really take off and maybe make this team significantly better on the offensive side, which would be huge for Minnesota's ability to fight for an NFC North title as well as playoff seeding down the stretch.
