John Crimber made the most of his time in the Sunshine State.
Over the course of one busy weekend in Florida, the 20 year old bull rider reclaimed the No. 1 spot in the PBR Unleash The Beast World Standings and added a PRCA rodeo victory to his growing résumé.
Crimber finished third at the Tallahassee Major, one of the most important regular-season events on the Unleash The Beast schedule. The result earned him 120 UTB points, pushing him back ahead of seven time PRCA World Champion Sage Kimzey in the race.
Following the event, Crimber now sits No. 1 in the standings with 674 points, just 27 points ahead of Kimzey’s 647.
While Tallahassee reshaped the PBR standings, Crimber’s Florida trip included another highlight as well. The Texas cowboy traveled south to compete at the 98th Annual Arcadia All-Florida Championship Rodeo, where he won the bull riding title and nearly $6,000.
This win is another sign that Crimber’s decision earlier this year to purchase his PRCA permit is already paying off. He has said that this year the PBR World Title is one goal, but a trip to the National Finals Rodeo is another.
By entering professional rodeos while still competing on the PBR’s premier tour, Crimber has given himself quite the challenge. It’s a path not many riders attempt at the highest level, but one that Crimber appears comfortable navigating early in his career. If anyone can accomplish it, it is John.
Last season we watch Hudson Bolton accomplish a similar feat. Bolton won the PBR Rookie of the Year and made his NFR debut in the same year.
Crimber opened the weekend strong with an 88.80 point ride on Phe-Phe’s Soul Man, earning his second round win of the season. He followed it up with another solid ride in Round 2 aboard Chico for 88.55 points, climbing to the top of the event leaderboard heading into the Championship Round.
Although he was bucked off in the final round, his earlier performances were enough to secure a third place finish that ultimately pushed him back to the top of the world standings.
Sage Steele Kimzey started off well, but a buck off in round 2 would hurt his cause. Meanwhile, 2022 PBR World Champion Daylon Swearingen claimed the Tallahassee event victory, with a perfect 3-for-3 on the weekend.
With just five regular-season events remaining before the PBR World Finals in Fort Worth, the margin between Crimber and Kimzey is razor thin. A single qualified ride, or even a single round win, could totally flip the standings once again.
The battle between the veteran Kimzey and the rising star Crimber is an exciting one to watch and may continue to swing back and forth all the way to the final weekend of the year.
