In its fifth year of operation, PBR Teams is forging a new layer to the sport if Bull Riding, changing rider's decisions and strategies to be more focused on the group effort than individual success.
The PBR Teams Series: Anaheim was an action-packed weekend of rides and major moments. One highlight of the event was the return of New York City Mavericks Bob Mitchel. This cowboy has been out of competition since early August because of a serious wrist injury, which will require surgery in order to heal. This left Mitchel with a decision: get the surgery now and be out of competition for likely the remainder of the year, or hold off and continue to compete for his team.
Little surprise to those who have watched this rider throughout his career since his rookie PBR season in 2021, Bob decided to rest only long enough to rejoin his team. If he had been riding just for himself, he might have chosen surgery and forfeited the rest of the 2026 season. However, PBR Teams has introduced a new mindset, strategy, and opportunity to the sport of bull riding where a rider’s individual performance – though important – is no longer the sole mindset of a rider when they decide to enter the chutes.
As a part of the New York City Mavericks, Bob Mitchel is a part of something bigger than himself; as a noted leader among the men riding with the Mavericks, Mitchel understands his role as an experienced rider with a vital role to play on the team. This is likely a large reason why Mitchel decided to return to competition and delay surgery until after the 2026 PBR Teams season’s conclusion in November; a decision that has paid off immensely in just his first two weeks back in competition.
From his first out returning from injury, Bob Mitchel made it clear that he is not here to simply fill a roster, but to make big moves and score some major rides. Scoring an 85.85-point ride his first out back from injury, Mitchel has started a positive trend for himself and his team, securing three qualified rides across his first two events back.
This is a great achievement as he has only secured four qualified rides during the 2026 PBR Teams season, in large part because of the timing of his injury. However, to come back with an actively healing injury and ride his best for the season is truly a testament to his skill, determination, and also the additional level of motivation that riding for a team can make for a rider.
In only its fifth year of operation, the PBR Teams series has introduced an entirely new layer to rough stock events, shifting the strategy, motivation, and mindset of riders. No longer is every rider entering the chutes for their own success, they all carry a duty and a responsibility to each other. Being able to support the other riders on one’s team is an invaluable opportunity for riders to truly put their best into every out.
Overall, Bob Mitchel’s successful return form injury, despite needing surgery in the long run, has painted a clear picture of the impact that a team-oriented mindset can affect the decisions made by a rider. Fans are excited to see how this cowboy will continue to succeed throughout the season, and how the teams community will continue to grow.
