The Resistol Rookie bull rider looks to make a major move in the standings after taking home over $12,000 in Oregon.
We’ve officially begun one of the most exciting, and busiest, times of the rodeo season: the summer run. Over the next few months is where we’ll see the most dramatic changes in the world standings race and get a more concrete idea of who’s punching their ticket to the NFR in December. For bull riders, the Sisters Rodeo Xtreme Bull Riding presented an opportunity to build momentum as their schedule kicks into overdrive – and Resistol Rookie Eyer Morrison did just that.
While this may be his first year of professional rodeo, the 19-year-old Nevada cowboy performed like a true veteran, taking the win with an 87-point ride aboard Corey & Lange Rodeo’s Kiss The Fire. Thanks to this victory, Morrison – who currently sits 25th in the world standings and 5th in the Resistol Rookie standings – added $12,690 to his season earnings.
No. 17-ranked cowboy Tristan Mize finished second with an 86-point ride worth $9,729. With less than $2,000 separating him from the Top 15, Mize is firmly in hunt for his first NFR qualification. Veteran bull riders Jeff Bertus and Josh Frost tied for third with a pair of 85.5-point rides, while Wayne Spain and Hayden Welsh tied for fifth with 85 points. Rounding out the leaderboard were Trent Ferreir and No. 13-ranked Lane Vaughan, who each scored 84 points.
While much of the attention is focused on the world standings leader race, the bubble race is just as important. The bubble refers to the cowboys around the No. 15 position who battle it out until the very end of the season for the final qualifying spot at the NFR. For competitors on the outside looking in, a big payday can quickly change the outlook of their season. That's what makes Morrison's victory on Wednesday so significant. A five-figure payday helps him gain valuable ground in his pursuit of Resistol Rookie glory.
