The PRCA saddle bronc rider is focused on recovery after addressing years of ongoing issues with his left hip.
Lefty Holman is beginning the recovery process after undergoing surgery on his left hip in Nashville this past week. The PRCA saddle bronc rider shared the update on social media, explaining that he has dealt with hip issues since 2020 and ultimately decided it was time to address the problems that had worsened over the years.
Holman traveled to Nashville to see Dr. Thomas Byrd, the same surgeon who performed two hip surgeries on tie-down roper Shad Mayfield over the past year. According to Holman’s post, the procedure addressed several issues that had been affecting his hip.
Dr. Byrd repaired a torn labrum, addressed damaged cartilage, reshaped bone that was causing impingement, and removed bone fragments, along with other issues inside the joint.
After years of dealing with the problem, the five-time NFR qualifier said he is looking forward to the opportunity to recover fully and ride at his potential.
“It’s been a long time coming, and I’m excited to finally get healthy and have the opportunity to ride at my full potential again,” Holman shared.
Holman also thanked Dr. Byrd and his medical team for their care, along with his wife for supporting him through the process. He acknowledged that recovery will take time, but expressed optimism about what lies ahead.
“A long road of recovery ahead, but I’m looking forward to the process and coming back stronger than ever,” he wrote. "Big things to come."
Despite battling injury, Holman finished No. 23 in the saddle bronc riding world standings this season. He delivered one of his strongest performances at the West of the Pecos Rodeo this summer, winning the event with an 88.5-point ride to collect $6,655. At the Greeley Stampede, he won the final round with an 89-point ride and finished second in the aggregate. He also made his mark at the Calgary Stampede, where he collected $14,750 in his pool. At the NFR Open at the Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo, Holman tied for third in the saddle bronc riding finals with an 86.5-point ride.
Now, with surgery behind him, Holman can turn his attention toward rehabilitation and the work required to return to the arena healthy and ready to compete at the highest level once more.
The Rodeo Roundtable team wishes Holman a speedy and full recovery as he begins this next chapter. We look forward to following his progress and seeing him back in action, better than ever.
