A 2.9 second run at Rodeo Austin by Dustin Egusquiza and JC Flake broke the team roping world record, marking the first time in PRCA history any team has broken the three-second mark.
Things have been fast at Rodeo Austin across all events. The team roping has gotten especially tough. On Wednesday night, it was history making and record breaking.
Dustin Egusquiza and J.C. Flake stopped the clock in 2.9 seconds, becoming the first team in PRCA history to record a sub-3-second run.
The best in the world have been chasing that 3 second mark for decades, getting close but never quite there, until now.
The run shattered the previous world record of 3.2 seconds, a mark set last summer by Mason Appleton and Rance Doyal and matched again just days earlier at Rodeo Austin by Doyal and James Arviso.
To understand how big this is, you have to look back at history of the team roping.
It took 16 years for the sport to go from a 3.3 second run, set by Chad Masters and Jade Corkill in 2009, down to 3.2.
Now, in a matter of days, we’ve seen that record be broken again and fall below three seconds entirely. If there’s any header out there built for a moment like this, it’s Florida Cowboy, Dustin Egusquiza. He’s known for his ability to get the rope on the steer faster than just about anyone in the game. His speed on the head side, paired with Milsap Texas man, JC Flake’s consistency and timing on the heels, came together perfectly in Austin.
Everything clicked and 2.9 seconds later, they broke history.
Now the question becomes well what happens next? Because rodeo is a sport where every tenth matters. Breaking into the two second range opens to door to something we have not seen before. Wheter than time holds or gets challenged again remains. Regardless, the bar was just moved in a big way and that is a time tough to beat.
Dustin and JC paired up this year and have had an outstanding season. Dustin sits 5th in the World Standings on the heading side and JC is 6th in the heeling. Dustin is chasing his 9th NFR appearance, and JC his first.
Last year, the duo teamed up for the first time to hit the 2025 season. They finished the year split however as Dustin qualified for the NFR and Flake finished on the outside at 24th in the World Standings. This year both of them sit in the top 10 now, and are looking at punching their ticket to Vegas together come December.
A 2.9 second run is incredible. There are so many things that have to go right in order for a team roping run to be successful at all, let alone in under 3 seconds. Any 3 second run even is rare and very impressive when two ropes, two guys, two horses, and one steer all have to work out just right to make it happen.
This run leads the second round with only a few days left of action at the 2026 Rodeo Austin.
