The Argentine international debuted with a goal and a fearsome physicality, injecting a ruthless edge into the champions' backline that already has his teammates terrified in training.

Facundo Medina has wasted little time making an impression at Bayer Leverkusen, with his aggressive style already earning praise and a few laughs from his new teammates.

The Argentine defender, who joined from Olympique Marseille over the summer, started in central defence against Union Berlin and played his part in a convincing 4-0 victory. He also capped his performance with a goal, scoring Leverkusen's second of the afternoon.

But it was Medina's mentality and physical approach that appeared to leave the biggest impression on his teammates.

He's fierce, nasty. He's a bit of a hard tackler, too. You're actually scared of him.

Ibrahim Maza said with a laugh after the game, according to SID

It was said jokingly, but there is an important truth behind the comment.

Medina has built much of his reputation around exactly that mentality. He is not a defender who wants to simply sit back and wait for an attacker to make a mistake. He wants to confront them. He wants to win the duel. And he wants his opponent to know that the next challenge is coming.

Patrik Schick offered a more diplomatic assessment, but highlighted the same qualities in the 27-year-old.

He's very aggressive, but still very good on the ball. You want a player like that on your team. He's a great guy.

Patrik Schick said.

That combination could become particularly important for Die Werkself.

The club did not sign Medina simply to add another body to the defence. Sporting director Simon Rolfes described him as a player with "strong mentality" who excels in one-on-one situations and is "assertive and aggressive." Leverkusen's official announcement also emphasised his ability to operate both at centre-back and on the left side of the defence.

That versatility gives new head coach Carles Martínez another option, but it is Medina's mentality that may ultimately prove more important.

Leverkusen has undergone significant changes this summer.

Several established figures have departed, while the squad has been reshaped around a new coaching project. In that context, adding a defender who brings aggression and personality was clearly part of the thinking.

Medina is also not arriving without experience. He spent five seasons at RC Lens before moving to Marseille in 2025 and has already represented Argentina at the highest level. He was part of the Argentina squad that reached the 2026 World Cup final, and he signed a contract with Leverkusen running until June 2031.

The transfer itself reportedly cost the German club €25 million, including bonuses, underlining the club's belief that Medina can become an important piece of the new project.

Against Union, he offered the first real evidence that the investment could pay off.

His goal in the 28th minute was the obvious highlight. But the more significant part of his performance may have been what he brought to the defensive line: authority, intensity and a willingness to engage.

For a team trying to establish a new identity under Martínez, those characteristics matter.

And Medina appears determined to make them part of it.
