Bayer Leverkusen are reportedly close to rewarding Christian Kofane's rapid rise with a new long-term contract, as Premier League interest continues to grow around the Cameroon international.

Christian Kofane has only been at Bayer Leverkusen for just over a year, but the forward has already moved from a promising young signing to an increasingly important part of the club's long-term plans.

According to BILD, Leverkusen are now close to reaching an agreement with Kofane over a new contract that would extend his stay until 2031. The proposed deal would reportedly increase his salary to around €4 million per year and, significantly, would not contain a release clause.

The development is another indication of just how quickly Kofane's situation has changed since arriving in Germany.

Leverkusen signed the striker from Spanish second-tier side Albacete in July 2025, when he was only 18. His initial contract ran until 2029, with the club viewing him as a player with significant potential rather than someone expected to immediately carry the attack.

Kofane had only made 20 senior appearances for Albacete before making the move, scoring eight goals and providing one assist. His rise had been remarkably quick even before arriving in Germany: he had moved from Cameroon to Albacete only months earlier, initially playing for the club's Under-19 side before breaking into the first team.

Leverkusen's decision to accelerate his development appears to have paid off.

The club initially had plans for Kofane to potentially leave on loan, but his performances during his first months around the first team changed the picture. Rather than sending him elsewhere to continue his development, Leverkusen increasingly saw a player capable of contributing at the highest level.

That progression has also attracted attention from England.

Arsenal, Newcastle United, Everton and Aston Villa have all been linked with the 20-year-old, while reports have suggested that Premier League clubs showed significant interest during the summer. Leverkusen ultimately kept hold of Kofane, and a new contract would now further underline their intention to make his development part of the club's future rather than preparing for an immediate sale.

That is where the absence of a release clause becomes particularly important.

Leverkusen have built their reputation in the last few years, partly around identifying young talent, developing it, and eventually commanding significant transfer fees when Europe's biggest clubs come calling. Kofane fits that model, but the club is not necessarily looking to sell him anytime soon.

Instead, extending his contract would give Leverkusen time.

It would protect the club from losing control of negotiations while allowing Kofane to continue developing in a familiar environment. The reported salary increase would also reflect his changing status within the squad.

There is still plenty of room for improvement. Kofane remains only 20 and is adapting to a much higher level than the Spanish second division where his senior career began. But his physical and technical profile, pace, and ability to play as a powerful centre-forward have made him an intriguing prospect.

Die Werkself themselves highlighted those qualities when signing him, describing Kofane as powerful, fast, technically gifted, and assertive.

Now the club appears ready to put its money behind that belief.

A contract running until 2031 would not guarantee that Kofane stays in Leverkusen for the next five seasons. Interest from the Premier League is unlikely to disappear, particularly if his development continues at its current pace.

But it would send a clear message: Leverkusen are not yet ready to sell!
