Xabi Alonso’s side joins European giants chasing Granada’s breakout 17-year-old winger, whose explosive Segunda División form and modest release clause have sparked a high-stakes continental bidding war.
When it comes to identifying the next big talent, few clubs in Europe do it better than Bayer Leverkusen. They have made a habit of spotting young players before their value explodes and giving them the platform to develop at the highest level. Owen Emeka could be the next name to put that recruitment model to the test.
The 17-year-old Granada winger has emerged on Leverkusen's radar after breaking into senior football in Spain this season, with Arsenal, Newcastle United and AC Milan also following his development.
According to Matteo Moretto, Emeka's contract contains a release clause worth €15 million. Real Madrid had already explored a move before the teenager renewed with Granada earlier this year, but those discussions did not progress.
Leverkusen have now joined a considerably wider race.
It is easy to understand why.
Emeka was still playing almost exclusively at youth level last season. He made 27 appearances for Granada's Juvenil A across the league and Copa del Rey, scoring seven times, while also receiving 12 appearances with the reserve side in the Tercera Federación. Granada responded to his progress by securing him to a new contract until 2031.
This season has accelerated everything.
Emeka was promoted to Granada's first-team squad and has already made six Segunda División appearances, three of them as a starter.
His first senior goal arrived against Albacete in September.
Picking up the ball on the right, Emeka protected it under pressure, drove past two defenders and finished the move himself. It made him the second-youngest goalscorer in Granada's history at 17 years, four months and 23 days.
That performance attracted particular attention.
Gazzetta dello Sport reported that a Milan scout was in Spain watching Granada that day. The original assignment was to observe midfielder Dylan Rodríguez, but Emeka stood out. Milan are now among the clubs following him.
For Leverkusen, there is a familiar theme to the interest.
Simon Rolfes has increasingly pushed Bayer to identify players before their value explodes, and Owen Emeka fits that strategy. Kennet Eichhorn arrived this summer after emerging as one of Germany's outstanding teenage midfielders, while Leverkusen has continued investing in academy prospects and carefully managing the development of players such as Francis Onyeka. Eichhorn and Onyeka have since both been recognised with Fritz Walter Medal gold.
Christian Kofane is perhaps the clearest comparison.
The Cameroonian striker is being followed today by some of the biggest clubs in Europe, including Arsenal. Leverkusen spotted him at Albacete before the wider market caught up. Interestingly, it's the same club that Emeka scored his first professional goal against.
There is another interesting Leverkusen connection.
Emeka is a Spanish youth international and would arrive at a club with a growing Spanish influence. Carles Martínez is in charge of the first team, while Miguel Gutiérrez, Aleix García and Lucas Vázquez are already part of the squad. That does not decide a transfer, but it would give Die Werkself a familiar environment to present if the competition for his signature becomes serious.
The €15 million clause is what makes the situation particularly interesting.
Leverkusen would not need to spend months negotiating Granada down from a much larger valuation if they eventually decide Emeka is ready. The figure is already known.
The harder part would be convincing the player.
Arsenal and Newcastle can offer Premier League resources. Milan have already watched him in person. Real Madrid were interested before his renewal.
Leverkusen's argument would have to be different.
They can point to a recruitment model built around giving elite young players a route into senior football, developing them quickly and trusting them before many bigger clubs are prepared to do the same.
For now, there is no official offer and no indication that a deal is close.
Emeka has only just begun his first senior season.
