Bayer Leverkusen are closing in on another major signing of the summer after reaching an agreement with Olympique de Marseille for the transfer of Facundo Medina.
According to L'EQUIPE, the Bundesliga club has agreed a deal worth €25 million, comprising €23 million guaranteed plus a further €2 million in performance-related bonuses, to bring the Argentine defender to the BayArena.
The agreement comes after Leverkusen intensified negotiations in recent days.
An initial proposal submitted to Marseille was rejected, but Bayer quickly returned with an improved offer that has now convinced the Ligue 1 side to sanction the transfer. The clubs are now fully aligned on the financial package, leaving only the player's arrival and the completion of the remaining formalities before the move is officially announced.
Personal terms are not expected to present any issues.
Medina had already reached an agreement with Bayer Leverkusen over a long-term contract before the clubs finalised negotiations, with the 27-year-old expected to sign a deal running for five seasons after returning from his summer holidays.
The move represents another significant statement from Leverkusen as they continue reshaping the squad under Carles Martínez.
Strengthening the defensive department has been one of the club's priorities throughout the transfer window following several departures, and Medina has consistently featured among Bayer's preferred options thanks to his experience, versatility and aggressive style of defending. A profile close to Piero Hincapié, who left the club to join Arsenal last year.
Capable of operating as a left-sided centre-back in both a back three and a back four, Medina also offers cover at left-back, providing Martínez with additional tactical flexibility heading into the new Bundesliga campaign.
The Argentina international arrives after spending just one season at Marseille, having joined the French club from Lens last summer.
