After nearly a decade in the academy, the gifted playmaker secured his first senior call-up, edging closer to a dream partnership with his idol, Ibrahim Maza.
At just 16 years old, Gabriel Minutillo has reached a major milestone in his young career, earning his first call-up to Bayer Leverkusen's senior squad.
The attacking midfielder was included in Carles Martínez's squad for Thursday's 2-0 Europa League victory against OFI Crete, marking another important step for one of the club's most promising academy talents.
What makes the occasion particularly special is Minutillo's connection to Die Werkself. He has been wearing the club's colours since the age of seven, progressing through the academy for almost a decade before finally receiving his first opportunity alongside the professionals.
Although he remained on the bench in Greece, the call-up represents a significant achievement for a player who has spent most of his childhood dreaming of this moment.
Nearly Ten Years At Leverkusen And A First Senior Call-Up
Born on January 13, 2010, Minutillo is a German youth international who also holds Croatian citizenship.
The 16-year-old primarily operates as an attacking midfielder and has progressed through Leverkusen's youth ranks, establishing himself as an exciting prospect.
He stepped up to the U19 side this season after already gaining experience at that level during the previous campaign. Minutillo has registered one goal and two assists this season and has also represented Germany at the U17 level.
His progress has not gone unnoticed by Leverkusen's management.
In July, the club announced that Minutillo had signed a new long-term contract, demonstrating their confidence in his development.
At the time, Bayer 04 director of football Kim Falkenberg described him as one of the country's most talented players in his age group.
"His development, particularly last season, has been very positive. He has great potential and could be a candidate for our first team in the long term."
Just three months later, Minutillo has already taken his first step towards fulfilling that prediction.
Ibrahim Maza Is The Player He Dreams Of Playing Alongside
Perhaps the most interesting part of Minutillo's story is his admiration for Ibrahim Maza.
Speaking in a podcast interview in September, the youngster revealed that Leverkusen's Algerian midfielder is his biggest role model.
"My role model is definitely Ibo Maza, because he plays in my position, the ten. I love the way he plays and how he dribbles,"
He also praised Maza's creativity, decisive passing and willingness to contribute defensively.
"It's my dream to play together with him here in a few years."
That ambition now feels considerably closer.
Maza is one of the most important players under Martínez, and Minutillo's inclusion in the senior squad gives him an opportunity to learn from the footballer he admires most and maybe soon the chance to play alongside him in an official game.
Martínez Opens The Door For Leverkusen's Next Generation
Minutillo's inclusion also sends a positive message to Leverkusen's academy.
Martínez has made an impressive start to his tenure, guiding the team to six consecutive victories while establishing a historic attacking record across his first ten competitive matches.
Despite the pressure to maintain that momentum, the Spaniard has shown a willingness to involve younger players.
Alongside Minutillo, 18-year-old defender Ben Hawighorst was also included in the squad for the trip to Greece.
Neither player featured in the victory, but training and travelling with the senior team provide valuable experience.
Minutillo himself made his ambitions clear in September.
"I would like to get the chance in this or the next season to make my professional debut. For now, I want to continue to develop. I just want to be a better player than I am now. It's my dream to play for Bayer Leverkusen."
His first senior appearance is still to come, but the journey from joining Leverkusen at seven to sitting on the first-team bench at 16 is already a special achievement.
For Minutillo, the dream is no longer quite so distant.
From here the stage only gets bigger.
