Despite netting three goals in just two starts, the veteran midfielder is struggling with life on the bench as he battles for a starting role under Carles Martínez.
Jonas Hofmann has admitted he is unhappy with his limited playing time at Bayer Leverkusen, despite delivering another impressive performance in Wednesday's 5-2 DFB-Pokal victory over 1. FC Nürnberg.
The 33-year-old scored in the 78th minute as Die Werkself secured their place in the round of 16, continuing an excellent run of individual performances whenever he has been given an opportunity to start.
Hofmann has now scored three goals across his only two starts this season, having previously netted twice against OFI Crete in the Europa League.
However, the experienced midfielder made it clear that his recent contributions have not changed his frustration with his position in Carles Martínez's squad.
Hofmann Admits Frustration Over Limited Opportunities
Speaking after the Nürnberg victory, Hofmann acknowledged that he would prefer a much more prominent role at Die Werkself.
"Of course, I'm not happy with the situation at the moment,"
The midfielder explained that he has experienced similar periods of limited playing time before and has never been comfortable watching from the sidelines.
Nevertheless, Hofmann recognises that the final decision belongs to Martínez.
Rather than publicly demanding a starting position, he intends to make his case through his performances.
That approach has certainly produced results in recent weeks.
Against OFI Crete, Hofmann scored twice to help Leverkusen secure a 2-0 victory. He followed that display with another goal against Nürnberg, giving Martínez a difficult selection decision ahead of the upcoming Bundesliga fixtures.
Fatherhood Provides An Extra Boost
Hofmann also revealed that the recent birth of his second child has provided additional motivation.
The German midfielder believes that a positive development in his personal life has improved his performance.
He pointed towards his recent goals as evidence of the confidence he currently feels.
His latest strike arrived in the 78th minute against Nürnberg, helping Leverkusen turn a competitive cup encounter into a convincing 5-2 victory.
Hofmann also praised the team's improvement after the interval, acknowledging that Nürnberg had made life difficult during the opening stages.
Bayer eventually found greater attacking fluency in the second half, allowing their individual quality to make the difference.
Martínez Faces A Selection Dilemma
Hofmann's form presents Martínez with an interesting decision.
The Spanish coach has several attacking options competing for places, including Ibrahim Maza, Malik Tillman, Nathan Tella and Afonso Moreira.
Hofmann offers something different from the younger players in the squad.
Rather than relying on pace or repeated dribbling attempts, the German is particularly effective at recognising when to move inside from the right, arriving in spaces left open by defenders who have been drawn towards the ball.
His timing around the penalty area remains one of his most valuable qualities, allowing him to contribute goals without needing to dominate possession.
That experience can be especially useful against opponents who defend deep and leave little room for direct running.
At 33, Hofmann also understands that consistent playing time cannot be taken for granted, particularly in a squad undergoing changes under a new coaching staff.
But three goals in two starts provide a strong argument that he deserves more opportunities.
With Leverkusen preparing to return to Bundesliga action against Stuttgart, Martínez must decide whether Hofmann's recent performances justify another place in the starting eleven or whether he will once again have to make his case from the bench.
