The veteran playmaker rejected a lucrative Saudi Pro League switch to fight for his place under Carles Martínez, navigating a shifting squad hierarchy and personal family milestones.

Jonas Hofmann will remain at Bayer Leverkusen after all. According to BILD, the 34-year-old will not move to Saudi Arabia, ending the final unresolved transfer question surrounding the Bundesliga club this summer.

Hofmann had been in contact with Al-Shabab over a possible move to the Saudi Pro League, with the opportunity remaining open well beyond the end of the European transfer window. That possibility has now disappeared, however, with the Saudi Pro League's own registration deadline having passed.

The distinction between Saudi Arabia's general transfer calendar and the deadline for its top division proved crucial. While the Saudi Arabian Football Federation lists October 12 as the transfer deadline for certain competitions, Pro League clubs had only until September 6 to complete their business. Hofmann remained at Leverkusen beyond that deadline, meaning a move to Al-Shabab is no longer possible this summer.

Die Werkself had been prepared to make things relatively straightforward.

The club would have allowed Hofmann to leave on a free transfer, according to BILD, despite the player remaining under contract until June 2027. Such a departure would also have removed his salary from the club's wage bill for the remainder of his deal.

Instead, Hofmann will now return to a very different challenge: finding a way back into Leverkusen's plans.

His situation has become increasingly difficult over the opening weeks of the season. Hofmann was named in the squad for Saturday's 4-0 victory over Union Berlin but remained an unused substitute. His previous appearance came as a late substitute during the 3-2 defeat at Elversberg, offering little indication that he is close to becoming a regular part of Carles Martínez's starting XI.

Competition is only going to become stronger.

Nathan Tella, Eliesse Ben Seghir and Martin Terrier are all returning from injury, providing Martínez with additional options in the attacking positions. All three have been included in Leverkusen's Europa League squad, while Hofmann was left out.

That decision perhaps tells the clearest story of where the veteran currently stands.

Hofmann joined Die Werkself in 2023 after an impressive spell at Borussia Mönchengladbach and played an important role during the club's historic 2023-24 campaign, when Leverkusen won the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal double. Two years later, however, his place in the squad hierarchy has changed considerably.

There is also a personal dimension to the decision.

Hofmann and his wife, Laura, are expecting their second child, and that family situation may have contributed to the decision not to pursue the lucrative Saudi opportunity.

For now, Hofmann remains a Leverkusen player until at least January. Unless another club makes a move during the winter window, he is set to stay until the end of his contract next summer.

The Saudi chapter is closed for now. The bigger question is whether Hofmann can still write another chapter at Leverkusen.
