Bayer Leverkusen’s rising star faced a premature exit during international duty, stalling his prolific goalscoring momentum as concerns mount over his fitness for club and country.
Christian Kofane's encouraging start to the new season has been briefly overshadowed by a thigh concern, with the Bayer Leverkusen striker forced off at half-time during Cameroon's 3-1 victory over Comoros on Thursday.
Kofane started at centre-forward as Cameroon opened their Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign with a win in Garoua. He played the first 45 minutes before being replaced by Bil Nsongo at the interval, with head coach David Pagou later explaining the decision.
"He was holding his thigh; he felt a little twinge, and we did not want to take any risk."
The timing will naturally attract attention at Bayer Leverkusen, particularly given the role Kofane has begun to carve out at the start of the 2026/27 campaign.
The 20-year-old has made an impact whenever given the opportunity. He scored in Leverkusen's DFB-Pokal win over Wehen Wiesbaden before finding the net again in the Bundesliga defeat at Elversberg. He then scored against Augsburg in September, giving him two Bundesliga goals from his opening three league appearances.
Kofane has not always been a regular starter, but his efficiency has been notable.
Across those three Bundesliga appearances, he has played 122 minutes and scored twice, while also registering eight shots. His minutes have largely come from the bench, but the striker has consistently offered an attacking outlet when introduced.
That development is significant given the expectations surrounding Kofane since his move to Leverkusen from Albacete in 2025. The Cameroon international joined the German club as an 18-year-old after scoring eight goals in 20 appearances for Albacete's first team during the second half of the 2024/25 season. Bayer sporting director Simon Rolfes described him at the time as a powerful and fast striker with the technical ability and assertiveness to make Leverkusen's attack more varied.
The early signs of the new season suggest Kofane is continuing to develop in that direction.
He also featured prominently during Leverkusen's pre-season, including in a match against Newcastle United, where his partnership with Ibrahim Maza helped create the opening goal within the first minute.
For Cameroon, meanwhile, Kofane is becoming part of a new generation of attacking options around players such as Bryan Mbeumo and Danny Namaso. He started against Comoros alongside the two forwards, although his evening ended earlier than planned.
Cameroon ultimately secured a 3-1 victory, with David Nyengue opening the scoring before Mbeumo and Namaso added further goals.
The immediate concern, however, is Kofane's thigh.
Pagou's explanation suggested the substitution was precautionary rather than confirmation of a serious injury. Still, with Cameroon preparing for another qualifier against Congo on Tuesday and Leverkusen's Bundesliga campaign set to resume after the international break, the striker's condition will be monitored closely.
For a player who has started the season by turning limited opportunities into goals, the hope in both Cameroon and Die Werkself is that this latest setback is nothing more than a brief interruption.
