Patrik Schick’s clever late backheel rescued a point for Die Werkself after a rapid Michael Gregoritsch brace punished the visitors’ sudden defensive lapse in a dramatic encounter.
Bayer Leverkusen were forced to settle for a point at Augsburg after surrendering a first-half lead, with Patrik Schick producing a moment of individual quality late on to prevent what would have been another damaging Bundesliga defeat.
Die Werkself started brightly and looked the more dangerous side during the opening period. Christian Kofane gave them the breakthrough in the 18th minute, capping an impressive individual display with a composed finish after Edmond Tapsoba found him in space.
The goal reflected Leverkusen's superiority before the interval. Their movement between the lines troubled Augsburg, while their attackers repeatedly found chances to enter the final third.
But whatever Manuel Baum said at half-time changed the game.
Augsburg emerged with far greater intensity and immediately began forcing Leverkusen backwards. Michael Gregoritsch became the central figure in the turnaround, scoring twice in quick succession to completely reverse the momentum.
His first came shortly after the restart, before he struck again five minutes later, turning a 0-1 deficit into a 2-1 advantage for the hosts.
For Leverkusen, the problem was not a lack of attacking intent. They continued to create chances and thought they had levelled through Ibrahim Maza, only for the goal to be overturned following a VAR review.
The visitors refused to disappear, however.
Carles Martínez introduced Patrik Schick and Guela Doué from the bench as Leverkusen searched for a way back into the match. The pressure eventually told in the closing stages.
Malik Tillman delivered the ball into a crowded penalty area, and Schick produced the decisive touch, rather than attempting to force the finish, the Czech striker improvised with a clever backheel that redirected the ball beyond Finn Dahmen.
It was the kind of finish that Leverkusen desperately needed.
The final score does not fully reflect the balance of chances. Leverkusen finished with 30 attempts and generated 2.81 expected goals, while Augsburg managed eight shots and 0.88 xG. The visitors also dominated possession and won 14 corners.
Yet Augsburg demonstrated why their unbeaten start should be taken seriously. They were able to withstand long periods without the ball, punish Leverkusen when opportunities arrived, and nearly turn the game into another statement victory.
For Leverkusen, the draw provides some relief but also leaves plenty to analyse.
They had enough control and chances to win the match, but their second-half collapse once again showed how quickly a promising performance can unravel when the opposition finds momentum.
Schick's late intervention ensured they left Augsburg with something to show for their efforts.
It may prove to be an important point, but Leverkusen will know they had the chance to take all three.
