High-flying Freiburg put their nine-match unbeaten streak on the line as Patrik Schick chases goalscoring history against a Leverkusen side hungry to reclaim the Bundesliga summit.

Bayer Leverkusen face one of their toughest challenges of the season on Sunday as Bundesliga leaders SC Freiburg arrive at the BayArena looking to extend their remarkable unbeaten run.

Carles Martínez's side have won four consecutive competitive matches, including their dramatic 4-3 victory over Mainz and Thursday's convincing 4-0 Europa League triumph against Lech Poznań.

However, Freiburg presents a different challenge. Julian Schuster's team sits top of the Bundesliga with 13 points from five matches, three ahead of fourth-placed Leverkusen, and remains unbeaten in all nine competitive fixtures this season.

The match kicks off at 15:30 CEST on Sunday, October 18.

Leverkusen Have A Chance To Close The Gap

Die Werkself's recovery from their opening-day defeat against Elversberg has been impressive.

The Werkself have collected ten points from their first five Bundesliga matches, scoring 14 goals while conceding eight. Their attacking performances have improved considerably, although the seven goals conceded across their recent matches against Augsburg and Mainz highlight an area that still needs attention.

Freiburg, meanwhile, have conceded just four Bundesliga goals, the best defensive record in the competition.

Schuster's side have won four league matches and drawn once, while their recent 3-2 Conference League victory over Jablonec extended their unbeaten start to nine competitive games.

Leverkusen have won both Bundesliga home matches this season without conceding, making Sunday's encounter a fascinating test of two teams in excellent form.

Martínez is expecting a demanding contest against opponents he believes deserve their position at the top.

"I have great respect for them. They deserve to be in first place."

The Spaniard explained during his pre-match press conference.

Schick Chases History As Terrier Suffers Another Setback

Patrik Schick could become the first Leverkusen player to score in six consecutive Bundesliga appearances.

The Czech striker has found the net in all five league matches this season, equalling a club record previously achieved by Stefan Kießling and Dimitar Berbatov.

He also scored twice from the penalty spot against Lech Poznań, underlining his importance to Martínez's attack.

However, Die Werkself will have to manage several attacking absences.

Martin Terrier suffered a muscular injury to his left hamstring in Poland and has been ruled out until December. Christian Kofane and Eliesse Ben Seghir are also unavailable, while Montrell Culbreath remains sidelined.

Martínez nevertheless retains options, with Victor Boniface available alongside Schick and players such as Malik Tillman and Ibrahim Maza capable of occupying more advanced positions.

Tillman's goal against Lech Poznań could prove particularly valuable for his confidence following a difficult start to the campaign.

Freiburg Lose Key Attacker Ahead Of BayArena Clash

Freiburg also have a significant selection problem.

Yuito Suzuki is suspended after receiving two yellow cards against Schalke, depriving Schuster of an important attacking player for the trip to Leverkusen.

There is better news regarding Derry Scherhant and Niklas Beste, both of whom are expected to be available after recent fitness concerns.

Vincenzo Grifo remains another major threat. The experienced attacker scored a spectacular free kick against Jablonec and will be central to Freiburg's hopes of troubling the Leverkusen defence.

The visitors will also draw confidence from their impressive away record, although their last Bundesliga victory at the BayArena came in September 2022.

For the Schwarzroten, Sunday's fixture is about more than extending their winning streak. Victory would bring them level on points with Freiburg and strengthen their position among the Bundesliga's leading contenders.

For Freiburg, it represents an opportunity to demonstrate that their outstanding start is no temporary surprise.

With both teams arriving in excellent form, the BayArena is preparing for a genuine early-season showdown.

From here the stage only gets bigger.
