The American midfielder confronts rumors of a January exit, vowing to translate his international form into Bundesliga consistency following a pivotal Europa League goal for Bayer Leverkusen.
Malik Tillman has admitted that he still has plenty to prove at Bayer Leverkusen, despite taking an important step forward with his recent performance against Lech Poznań in the Europa League.
The American midfielder has endured a difficult start to the season, struggling to establish himself under head coach Carles Martínez. Reports have even suggested that a January loan could become an option if his situation fails to improve.
However, after scoring in Leverkusen's 4-0 victory over Lech Poznań, Tillman appears determined to fight for his place rather than dwell on his frustrations.
Tillman Knows He Has More To Offer
Speaking to BILD, Tillman acknowledged that his performances in Germany have not yet reflected his full potential.
"I know that I can do even more. And I know what I showed in the USA. For me, it's about proving that to people here now too."
The 24-year-old has already demonstrated his attacking qualities internationally, but translating those performances into consistent contributions for Die Werkself remains his immediate challenge.
His goal against Lech Poznań arrived at an important moment, particularly following reports of dissatisfaction surrounding his limited impact this season.
Nevertheless, Tillman is refusing to get carried away by one encouraging display.
"It was just one game. Anyone can have a good game, that's how self-critical I am. It was a good start, and I have to build on that."
Teammates Helped Tillman Through Difficult Period
Tillman also revealed how important the support of his teammates has been during his difficult start.
Loïc Badé and Ibrahim Maza are among his closest friends in the Leverkusen dressing room, encouraging while he works to establish himself.
The midfielder also showed understanding towards Martínez, acknowledging the difficulty of managing a large squad with competing ambitions.
"It's a bit tricky with the coach. He has to look after 25 players at the same time and can't always keep everyone happy, but in the end, it's up to me what I make of it."
Rather than publicly criticising his coach, Tillman appears willing to take responsibility for changing his situation.
January Transfer Questions Remain
Tillman's comments come amid speculation about his future at the BayArena.
According to recent reports, both Leverkusen and the player could consider a temporary departure in January if regular playing opportunities remain limited.
His performance against Lech Poznań, however, offers a possible turning point.
With Leverkusen competing in the Bundesliga and Europa League, opportunities should arise for Tillman to demonstrate his qualities over the coming weeks.
The challenge is now to turn one promising performance into a sustained run of form.
For a player who believes he has considerably more to offer, the coming matches could prove decisive in determining whether his future remains in the German side or takes a different direction this winter.
From here the stage only gets bigger.
