Algeria's rising playmaker avoided long-term damage after an international injury scare, but lingering ankle pain forces a late fitness test ahead of Leverkusen’s crucial trip to Mainz.

Bayer Leverkusen have received encouraging news on Ibrahim Maza after examinations revealed that the midfielder suffered only an ankle bruise during international duty with Algeria.

The 20-year-old was forced off before half-time in Algeria's 2-1 victory over Niger after being caught by a challenge and twisting his right ankle.

There were initial concerns about the severity of the injury, particularly after Maza returned to Germany wearing a compression bandage.

But according to BILD, a serious injury has now been largely ruled out, leaving Leverkusen hopeful that their playmaker will not face a lengthy absence.

A Protective Bandage May Have Prevented Worse

One detail from BILD's report helps explain why Maza escaped more serious damage.

The Algerian international routinely wears a tape bandage around his foot for additional stability during matches.

That precaution is believed to have reduced the impact of the challenge against Niger.

Maza initially experienced considerable pain around his right ankle, but the discomfort has already decreased since the incident.

Examinations conducted after his return to Germany on Thursday confirmed a bruise rather than a more serious injury.

However, the pain has not completely disappeared.

Mainz Decision Expected On Friday

Maza's availability for Saturday's Bundesliga match against Mainz remains uncertain.

Leverkusen coach Carles Martínez will have a clearer picture following today's training session, when the midfielder's ability to put full weight on his ankle will be assessed.

The club will not risk his fitness simply to get him onto the pitch.

Maza also reportedly will not receive a painkilling injection to make himself available.

Given the importance of his touch and close control, playing with a numbed foot would interfere with the technical qualities that make him so effective.

That leaves Die Werkself facing a late decision.

If Maza cannot train without discomfort, Martínez may have to adjust his attacking midfield for the trip to Mainz.

Leverkusen Cannot Afford Another Injury

The news comes at an important moment for Bayer.

Christian Kofane is already expected to miss several weeks with a thigh injury, leaving Martínez with fewer attacking options ahead of a demanding schedule.

The German side is preparing for seven competitive matches in 22 days, with Bundesliga, Europa League, and DFB Pokal fixtures all approaching.

Maza has become one of the most important players in that attacking structure.

He has played every minute of Leverkusen's opening four Bundesliga matches, contributing one goal and two assists.

His ability to operate between the lines, carry possession forward and create opportunities has made him particularly valuable during the club's transition under Martínez.

If he is unavailable against Mainz, Malik Tillman would be one of the leading alternatives in the attacking midfield position.

Positive News During An Important Week

The injury update also arrives as the club is working to secure Maza's long-term future.

Bayer has opened discussions with the player's representatives over an improved contract. According to Sky Sport Germany, Maza is receptive to extending his stay despite growing interest from Premier League clubs.

That reflects his increasing importance to the club.

For now, however, the immediate priority is ensuring that the ankle injury does not develop into something more serious.

Die Werkself have avoided the worst-case scenario, but whether Maza can face Mainz will depend on how he responds in training.

With a demanding October ahead, keeping him healthy matters considerably more than rushing him back for one match.
