The Spanish giants face stiff competition from Premier League heavyweights for the versatile defender, but a specific €70 million buyback clause leaves Liverpool holding the ultimate power.

Real Madrid's interest in Jarell Quansah is becoming more serious.

After reports last week first placed the Bayer Leverkusen defender on Madrid's radar, Sky Sport Germany now reports that the Spanish giants are regularly monitoring the 23-year-old as they consider long-term additions to their defence.

And Real are not alone.

Liverpool continues to follow their former academy graduate closely, while Chelsea and Arsenal are also interested.

For Leverkusen, however, one of those clubs matters considerably more than the others.

Liverpool Hold The Key

Real Madrid, Arsenal, and Chelsea can all pursue Quansah, but Liverpool have something none of them possess: A fixed route to sign him.

Liverpool can activate a €70 million buyback option until June 15, 2027. Quansah originally joined Die Werkself from Anfield in the summer of 2025 for € 35 m.

That clause has increasingly become the central issue surrounding his future.

We reported last week that Liverpool's next opportunity to activate their buyback arrives in 2027 and that Leverkusen have already demonstrated how highly they value Quansah by resisting approaches for him this summer.

Arsenal's interest is particularly familiar.

Leverkusen rejected their attempt to sign Quansah during the summer, deeming the England international too important for Carles Martínez's plans to sell.

Liverpool are different because Bayer cannot simply set their own price if the relevant contractual option is exercised.

Quansah's Rise Has Changed The Picture

The interest is also a reflection of how quickly Quansah's status has changed since leaving England.

He made 44 appearances in his first season in Germany, starting 40, before earning a place in England's squad for the 2026 World Cup. His ability to operate both centrally and at right-back has subsequently become increasingly important for club and country.

Real appear to have noticed.

According to the same report, Madrid see Quansah as a defender with considerable development potential as they search for longer-term solutions at the back.

That is an important distinction.

There is no suggestion yet of an offer or negotiations between Real Madrid and Leverkusen. This remains monitoring rather than a transfer operation.

But Bayer now know the list of clubs watching one of their most valuable defenders is growing.

Leverkusen Face A Different Decision In 2027

Leverkusen's position remains strong against most interested clubs.

Quansah is contracted until 2030, and Bayer have already shown they are prepared to reject significant interest rather than dismantle a defence Martínez is still building.

The complication is June 15.

If Liverpool does not activate their option by then, Leverkusen's control over any subsequent negotiations becomes considerably more important.

If they do, Bayer could lose a player who has developed from a €35m signing into a defender being watched by Real Madrid, Arsenal and Chelsea for the predetermined €70m figure.

That makes Liverpool's decision almost as important to Leverkusen as Quansah's own.

For now, Real Madrid are watching.

By next summer, several of Europe's biggest clubs may be ready to do considerably more than that.

From here the stage only gets bigger.
