The Bundesliga champions have landed Lyon’s 1.90-metre midfield prodigy for €265,000, integrating the technical youth international into their academy as a high-upside project for the senior squad.
Bayer Leverkusen have completed the signing of highly rated midfielder Kenan Doganay from Olympique Lyon, securing another promising young talent as part of their long-term development strategy.
The 17-year-old midfielder joins Leverkusen after spending a decade within Lyon’s academy system, with the French club confirming that the transfer was completed for a fee of €265,000. In addition, Lyon have retained a 10 per cent share of any future resale profit, allowing them to benefit if Doganay’s value increases during his career.
According to Kicker, Doganay’s arrival is not connected to the possible departure of Ezequiel Fernández, despite both players being able to operate in defensive midfield roles. The French youth international is viewed as a future project and will initially join Leverkusen’s U19 squad rather than immediately competing for a first-team place.
The move represents another example of Leverkusen’s strategy of identifying talented players at an early stage and developing them within their own structure.
Doganay leaves Lyon after ten years at the club, having joined their academy at the age of seven. The midfielder grew up within one of France’s most respected youth systems and thanked the club for the role it played in his development.
“After ten years in these colors, the time has come for me to turn a new page,” Doganay wrote in a farewell message.
The 17-year-old arrives in Germany with an interesting physical profile. Standing at 1.90 metres, Doganay combines size and technical ability, with the versatility to operate both as a defensive midfielder and a more advanced number eight.
Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes highlighted the club’s belief in the teenager’s potential.
“Kenan Doganay is a highly interesting and very talented player who will be a reinforcement for our U19 and, in addition, has good prospects for the licensed team in the long term. We are very pleased that we were able to complete this transfer,” Rolfes said.

For Leverkusen, the signing fits a model that has become central to the club’s sporting philosophy. Rather than only investing in established names, the Werkself continue to search for young players with significant upside and provide them with a pathway towards professional football.
Doganay joins a group of emerging talents who represent the club’s future, with Leverkusen continuing to strengthen their academy and youth structures alongside first-team recruitment.
The club also recently extended the contract of U19 goalkeeper Simeon Rapsch until 2029, further underlining their commitment to developing players internally.
While Doganay is not expected to make an immediate impact at senior level, Leverkusen believe they have secured a midfielder with the qualities and potential to progress through their system.
For Lyon, the agreement guarantees an immediate financial return while keeping a future interest in the player’s development. For Leverkusen, it is another calculated investment in the next generation.
From here, the stage only gets bigger.
