Where and When To Watch FIFA World Cup LIVE: Germany Vs Paraguay

Germany are set to begin the knockout phase of the 2026 FIFA World Cup today as they take on Group D 3rd-placed team Paraguay.

For Germany, they knew they would be making an appearance in this game for some time now. Following their comeback win against Ivory Coast, they confirmed their spot in the Round of 16. 

And it was perhaps because of this fact that the Germans would go on to lose their final game in Group E to Ecuador 2-1, putting in the sort of performances that could have been expected from a side that had nothing to play for, especially against an Ecuador side that had everything to play for.

Their opponents in Boston today, Paraguay, had a slightly different set of circumstances going into their final group game against Australia. While Paraguay were also confirmed through into the Round of 32, whether they finished 2nd or 3rd in their group remained unknown.

A win for them against Australia would have sent them up with a tie against Egypt; anything else (draw or loss) would have set them up for a clash against Germany.

What proceeded was a cagey 0-0 with Australia meaning both sides progress, but it will be Australia playing the more favourable tie against Egypt and Paraguay making the trip to Boston to take on Germany.

Julian Nagelsmann's Germany squad contains four Borussia Dortmund players within it: Maximilian Beier, Felix Nmecha, Nico Schlotterbeck and Waldemar Anton. 

At the beginning of the tournament, both Felix Nmecha and Nico Schlotterbeck were both key players in this Germany side.

However, since then, while the former of those two, Felix Nmecha, continues to be an ever-present for Germany, playing in all three of their group games, scoring a goal and an assist, the latter of those players, Nico Schlotterbeck, picked up an injury in the second group game that has ruled him out of the rest of the tournament.  

So, with Nico Schlotterbeck out, you would have initially thought it could be an opportunity for fellow Borussia Dortmund player Waldemar Anton. However, that seems unlikely as Julian Nagelsmann went for Antonio Rudiger in their final group game against Ecuador. 

However, Felix Nmecha remains a key man to watch in this game, with Germany hoping that he can continue with these impressive performances, as when Felix Nmecha plays well, so does Germany.

As for Maximilian Beier, he is a squad option for Germany in this World Cup and may be able to make an impact from the bench for Germany in this match, but I would not expect him to start with the likes of Kai Havertz and the in-form Deniz Undav ahead of him in the pecking order.

A worrying statistic for Germany will be that they have conceded in every World Cup 2026 game so far. Additionally, this will be Germany's first World Cup Knockout Match since the 2014 final, so this return to the knockouts has been 12 years in the making. 

However, they have just emerged from their group as winners, scoring 10 goals across 3 games, showing that maybe they can't keep their opponents out of their own goal, but they can certainly put goals themselves into the opponents' goal.

As for Paraguay, they have issues going forward with their draw against Australia producing just 0,83 combined xG, the lowest in the tournament so far. They have also generated the second-lowest xG out of all 48 teams in the group stages. 

But, one of the reasons why they are so poor going forward is their defensive record, as they kept clean sheets in both their games following their 4-1 defeat to the USA.
