The 18-year-old has officially joined Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund on a one-year loan from Japanese AFC Champions League Two winners Gamba Osaka.
Will Takato Yamamoto make an appearance for the senior squad this season?
Borussia Dortmund have officially announced the signing of Takato Yamamoto for their U23 development squad, initially on a season-long loan.
The 18-year-old made his senior debut for Japanese team Gamba Osaka in February 2026 in the J1 100 Year Vision League, making six appearances in total for the senior team, He featured in the matchday squad 16 times throughout last season.
He plays in central midfield and has featured in the Japanese under-19 team. He scored on his debut for the national side against Mexico in a 3-1 win.
One of these squad selections included the AFC Champions League Two final victory. Yamamoto’s side defeated Cristiano Ronaldo and Al-Nassr 1-0 in the final.
The player is clearly excited by the opportunity to join a club of the size of Borussia Dortmund as he explained in his first interview:
“I still can hardly believe it. Borussia Dortmund – such a great club. It is the first time I have left Japan; everything here is new to me. But I am ready. I want to learn every day and get better. And I will give everything to repay this trust.”

Dortmund has an exceptional track record of developing young talents, including the likes of Erling Haaland, Jude Bellingham, Robert Lewandowski, and Ousmane Dembele.

“Takato is a player who impressed us right from the start. He brings exactly the qualities we want to see in our style of play. We’re confident that he’ll take the next step in his development with us.”
What can we expect this season?
It may be a surprise if Yamamoto plays for the BVB senior squad given his young age and lack of senior minutes.
Playing for the U23s will be an opportunity to adapt to a new style of football by playing outside of Japan for the first time in his career.

This is a great move for both parties. It’s an extremely low-risk transfer given the player’s age and the lack of finances involved.
The player has been highly rated as one of Japan’s promising young prospects. This has been emphasised by his promotion to the Japanese under-19 squad as an 18-year-old.
Joining the U23 Borussia Dortmund squad gives the midfielder a great opportunity to develop. Hopefully it’s a move that works well for everyone involved, and perhaps the loan move could be made permanent if so.
Yamamoto's long-term plan will be for first team action, if development goes well with the youth side. Dortmund have explored similar pathways recently with the likes of Youssoufa Moukoko and Jamie Gittens making names for themselves over the last five years.
