RB Leipzig puts a ten-game home winning streak on the line as they look to exploit Manchester City’s defensive vulnerabilities and revive a stuttering European campaign.
RB Leipzig face one of their biggest tests of the season on Wednesday evening when Manchester City visit the Red Bull Arena for the fourth matchday of the Champions League league phase.
Martín Demichelis's side enter the encounter in excellent domestic form, having won their last three matches against Elversberg, Rot-Weiss Essen and Schalke 04.
However, their European campaign has been considerably more difficult. Leipzig have collected just three points from their opening three Champions League fixtures, suffering heavy defeats against Como and Real Madrid, either side of a narrow victory over PSV Eindhoven.
With Manchester City arriving in Germany, Leipzig have an opportunity to revive their European ambitions while extending an extraordinary winning run on home soil.
Leipzig's Perfect Home Record Faces Its Biggest Test
The Red Bull Arena has become a fortress under Demichelis.
Leipzig have won all five of their competitive home matches this season, extending their winning streak at the stadium to ten games across all competitions.
Their four Bundesliga home victories have produced 18 goals without conceding, while PSV Eindhoven were beaten 1-0 in Leipzig's previous Champions League home fixture.
That record provides genuine encouragement ahead of City's visit.
The Red Bulls have also recovered well from their 4-1 defeat against Real Madrid on October 21, recording three consecutive victories.
Saturday's 2-0 win over Schalke was particularly important, ending a run of three straight Bundesliga away defeats.
Antonio Nusa converted a penalty before assisting Rômulo for the second goal, helping Leipzig secure a clean sheet and move into fourth place in the Bundesliga.
The challenge now is to reproduce that level of control against opponents possessing considerably greater attacking quality.
Manchester City Arrive With Defensive Problems
Manchester City remain one of Europe's most dangerous attacking teams, but their performances under new head coach Enzo Maresca have been inconsistent.
The Italian replaced Pep Guardiola during the summer and inherited a squad that has undergone significant changes.
City has scored 40 goals in 15 competitive matches this season, with Erling Haaland responsible for 13 of them.
However, their defensive performances have been less convincing, particularly following Rodri's departure to Barcelona. City have struggled to control opposition counter-attacks when possession is lost, an issue Die Roten Bullen could exploit through the pace of Nusa and Gruda, plus the movement of Rômulo, Nkunku, and Gomis.
Their recent results have also raised questions.
City suffered Premier League defeats to Aston Villa and Brighton, but demonstrated their attacking potential by defeating AEK Athens 5-1 in their most recent Champions League fixture.
The English side currently has 6 points from 3 European games, 3 more than Leipzig.
Demichelis Faces His Former Club For The First Time
Wednesday's encounter will carry special significance for the Argentine head coach.
Demichelis spent three seasons at Manchester City between 2013 and 2016, making more than 100 appearances and winning the Premier League and two domestic cups.
Despite his long playing and coaching career, the Argentine has never previously faced City as an opponent.
His first meeting with his former club therefore comes at an important moment in Leipzig's European campaign.
The fixture also has a remarkable history.
RB Leipzig and Man City have met six times in the Champions League, producing 30 goals between them, an average of five per match.
City have won four of those encounters, while Leipzig's only victory came in December 2021, when goals from Dominik Szoboszlai and André Silva secured a 2-1 home win.
Three players from Leipzig's current squad, Christopher Nkunku, Benjamin Henrichs, and Lukas Klostermann, were involved that evening.
Captain Willi Orbán could also reach a personal milestone on Wednesday, with a potential 42nd Champions League appearance drawing him level with Yussuf Poulsen as Leipzig's joint-record appearance holder in the competition.
Champions League Points Becoming Increasingly Important
Leipzig's position in the league phase adds considerable importance to Wednesday's encounter.
After losing 4-1 to Como and Real Madrid, Demichelis's side sits 29th in the standings with three points.
Their only European victory came against PSV, meaning another defeat would leave the Bundesliga side under significant pressure heading into their remaining fixtures.
The Red Bulls will subsequently face Lens, Manchester United, Shakhtar Donetsk, and Feyenoord.
Manchester City, meanwhile, occupy tenth place with six points and will be looking to strengthen their position in the race for direct qualification to the knockout rounds.
From here the stage only gets bigger.
