A devastating injury recurrence forces the German starlet under the knife, halting his promising RB Leipzig breakthrough just minutes after a hard-fought return to the starting eleven.
Assan Ouédraogo had finally made it back.
After missing the entire month of August with a shoulder injury, the RB Leipzig midfielder had returned to competitive action against Como before being handed his first Bundesliga start of the season against Hamburger SV on Sunday.
Thirty-five minutes later, it was over again.
Ouédraogo went down after a challenge with Hamburg's Albert Grønbæk, immediately clutching his right shoulder. The 20-year-old was in obvious pain and had to be replaced by Christopher Nkunku as Leipzig went on to win 5-0.
At the time, the fear was that the same injury had returned.
Those fears have now been confirmed, and the news is even worse.
Ouédraogo will undergo surgery on the injured shoulder and is facing another lengthy spell on the sidelines. RB Leipzig have confirmed that the midfielder suffered a capsular injury to his right shoulder and will be out until further notice.
Assan has had so much bad luck with injuries over the past few years, but he’s fought his way back every single time. That makes it all the tougher for him to have to deal with another setback now. We know how much hard work, determination, and effort Assan has put into getting back on the pitch.
It is difficult to overstate how frustrating the timing is.
The Red Bulls had been extremely careful with Ouédraogo during his recovery. He had only recently returned to full team training, received medical clearance, and was gradually brought back into action. Demichelis had stressed that the youngster was ready to play before introducing him from the bench against Como and then starting him against Hamburg.
Now he has to start the process all over again.
Another setback for one of Leipzig's biggest talents
Ouédraogo's talent has never really been the question.
The German international remains one of the most exciting young players in Leipzig's squad, a powerful and technically gifted midfielder who has already attracted attention at the international level. But his development has repeatedly been interrupted by injuries since his move from Schalke in 2024.
He has now missed more than a year in total through various injury problems, with knee issues previously costing him significant periods of football. The shoulder has become the latest obstacle.
What makes this latest setback particularly difficult is that it comes immediately after another one.
In August, Leipzig initially opted for conservative treatment rather than surgery when Ouédraogo suffered a capsule injury to the same shoulder during pre-season. The hope was that rest and rehabilitation would be enough to get him back onto the pitch.
It worked, briefly.
Ouédraogo returned against Como and then started against Hamburg. Within half an hour, the problem had resurfaced.
This time, surgery is the decision.
For the German side, this means losing a player who could have become increasingly important during a season in which the club is trying to rebuild momentum under Martin Demichelis.
For Ouédraogo, it is another interruption at precisely the moment his career appeared ready to move forward.
"We need him. He is a brutal talent for Germany and for our club."
The Leipzig coach said this after seeing his midfielder leave the pitch. He also acknowledged that the injury appeared to be the same problem that had kept Ouédraogo out earlier in the summer.
Those words now carry even more weight.
Ouédraogo was expected to be part of the next generation of German internationals under Jürgen Klopp and had already made his senior debut. He had also been involved in Germany's World Cup picture earlier this year, being called up as a replacement even though he did not play during the tournament.
Now he faces another rehabilitation programme instead of another opportunity.
There is no shortcut through this one.
The most important thing for Leipzig will be ensuring that Ouédraogo gets the time and support required to return properly rather than rushing him back again.
The player has already shown that he can come back from setbacks.
Unfortunately for him, he now has another one to overcome.
