Squad exclusions and disciplinary tensions have pushed the Belgian winger toward a winter departure, leaving the €18 million signing fighting to salvage his career under Martín Demichelis.

Johan Bakayoko's future at RB Leipzig is becoming increasingly uncertain, with the Belgian winger emerging as a potential candidate for a January departure just over a year after his arrival.

According to Sky Sport Germany, both the player and the club are dissatisfied with his current situation. Bakayoko has already been excluded from Leipzig's matchday squad for sporting reasons this season, while his most recent absence was reportedly linked to disciplinary issues.

Although both sides still believe the situation can improve, a winter transfer could become an option if the winger fails to establish himself under Martín Demichelis.

For a player signed for a significant fee and tied to a long-term contract, the situation represents a concerning development.

From Major Signing To Squad Exclusion

The Red Bulls invested €18 million plus a potential €4 million in bonuses to sign Bakayoko from PSV, viewing the Belgian international as an important addition to their attacking options.

His contract runs until June 2030, meaning the club made a substantial long-term commitment to the winger.

Yet his second season has begun with uncertainty over his place in Demichelis' plans.

Being left out for sporting reasons suggests Bakayoko has struggled to convince the coaching staff that he deserves a place in the squad. The reported disciplinary exclusion adds another complication, although the precise circumstances have not been disclosed.

Sky reports that neither side is satisfied with how things have developed.

That is particularly significant given the competition for attacking positions at Leipzig.

Antonio Nusa has established himself as an influential player, while Christopher Nkunku's return has provided Demichelis with another high-quality attacking option.

Bakayoko must now demonstrate that he can offer something different if he wants to force his way back into contention.

PSV Reunion Offers Opportunity For A Reset

Despite the growing uncertainty, the German side has not given up on Bakayoko.

The Belgian is expected to return to the squad for the Champions League encounter against PSV Eindhoven, his former club.

That fixture could offer an important opportunity to change the direction of his season.

Bakayoko developed his reputation at PSV before moving to Germany, making the prospect of facing his former teammates particularly meaningful.

However, returning to the matchday squad would represent only the first step.

He still needs to convince Demichelis that he can contribute consistently, especially during a demanding October schedule featuring matches against PSV, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid.

Leipzig's emphatic 6-0 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt has also increased competition within the squad, with several attacking players delivering impressive performances.

For Bakayoko, opportunities cannot be taken for granted.

January Exit Becoming A Real Possibility

The next two months could determine whether Bakayoko has a long-term future in Leipzig. A winter departure is under consideration if there is no meaningful improvement in his situation.

However, there is currently no indication that the club has decided to sell him or that any negotiations are underway.

His contract until 2030 also gives Die Roten Bullen considerable control over any potential transfer.

For now, both sides remain hopeful that the relationship can be repaired.
