Seeking redemption after a domestic thrashing, Leipzig face a daunting trip to the Bernabéu as Christopher Nkunku chases club history against a red-hot Yan Diomande.

RB Leipzig face another enormous Champions League challenge on Wednesday evening when they travel to the Santiago Bernabéu to face Real Madrid, with Christopher Nkunku chasing a club record and former Leipzig star Yan Diomande waiting on the opposite side.

Martín Demichelis' team head to Spain under pressure following Saturday's humiliating 6-1 defeat against Bayern Munich. However, their recent 1-0 victory over PSV Eindhoven offers some encouragement ahead of a fixture that could prove crucial to their European ambitions.

For the Red Bulls, the opportunity is not only to respond to the disappointment in Munich but also to make history against one of Europe's most successful clubs.

Nkunku One Goal Away From Leipzig History

Christopher Nkunku could become RB Leipzig's outright leading goalscorer in Champions League history on Wednesday.

The French attacker currently has 11 goals in the competition for the Bundesliga side, level with former midfielder Emil Forsberg.

One more would take him clear at the top of the club's all-time Champions League scoring charts.

The Bernabéu encounter also brings back memories of Leipzig's famous 3-2 victory over Real Madrid in October 2022, when Nkunku scored to help secure one of the club's most memorable European results.

The 28-year-old recently demonstrated his finishing ability with a hat-trick in Die Roten Bullen's 6-0 Bundesliga victory over Eintracht Frankfurt.

However, after Leipzig's attacking struggles against Bayern, Demichelis will need his star forward to rediscover that form quickly.

Former Leipzig Star Diomande Awaits Reunion

Wednesday's fixture also marks a reunion with Yan Diomande, who left Leipzig for Real Madrid during the summer.

The Ivorian enjoyed an outstanding final season in Germany, registering 13 goals and ten assists in 36 competitive appearances before completing his move to Spain.

After a relatively quiet start in Madrid, Diomande has begun to find his rhythm.

He scored his first goal for the Spanish giants against Villarreal before delivering another impressive performance in Sunday's 4-1 victory over Sevilla.

The former RB winger assisted Arda Güler's opener before scoring himself with a powerful effort from outside the penalty area.

Having found the net in consecutive LaLiga matches, Diomande could now face his former teammates at an awkward moment for Leipzig's defence.

His recent performances add another intriguing storyline to an already difficult European assignment.

Mbappé Threatens Another Historic Night

The Red Bulls will also have to contain Kylian Mbappé, who is approaching another major Champions League milestone.

The French superstar made his 100th appearance in the competition against AS Roma last week, taking his record to 72 goals and 25 assists.

That leaves him just three direct goal involvements away from reaching 100 in the competition.

Real Madrid's home scoring record presents another challenge.

Los Blancos have scored in 44 consecutive Champions League home matches, meaning another goal on Wednesday would establish a new club record.

Leipzig's defensive performance will therefore be under intense scrutiny following the heavy defeat against Bayern.

Gruda Offers Leipzig Hope After PSV Breakthrough

One player who could provide a spark is Brajan Gruda.

The 22-year-old enjoyed a memorable evening against PSV Eindhoven, scoring the winning goal on his first Champions League start and earning the Player of the Match award.

His performance was particularly impressive statistically.

Gruda became only the second Leipzig player after Naby Keïta to combine a goal, at least five successful dribbles, and three chances created in a single Champions League match.

The German side has also shown they can trouble Real Madrid in the past, recording a victory and a draw across their four previous meetings.

However, with Madrid having won their opening two Champions League matches against Inter Milan and Roma, Demichelis' side will need a significant improvement on Saturday's performance.

For Nkunku, Wednesday offers the chance to claim a historic individual record. For Leipzig, the stakes are considerably greater.

After the humiliation in Munich, a strong performance at the Bernabéu could be exactly what Demichelis and his players need to restore confidence.

From here the stage only gets bigger.
