Europe’s elite are circling the versatile Frenchman as a high-stakes bidding war looms for the left-footed prodigy, whose tactical composure makes him the market's most coveted defender.
Castello Lukeba is beginning to look like one of the names that could define the next major defensive transfer market.
According to Fussball News, Chelsea have joined the growing group of European heavyweights monitoring the RB Leipzig centre-back, with Barcelona, Arsenal and Manchester City also reported to be keeping tabs on the 23-year-old Frenchman.
The interest is understandable when Lukeba's profile is considered.
A left-footed centre-back who can defend large spaces, recover quickly and remain composed when pressed, Lukeba has developed into the kind of defender increasingly sought by clubs playing with a high defensive line. His acceleration allows him to cover behind an aggressive back four, while his comfort in possession gives his team another route through the first phase of the build-up.
Those qualities were already part of the reason Leipzig moved for him in 2023, when they paid Lyon an initial €30 million for the French youth international. He has since grown into a key part of their defence and extended his contract until 2029 in October 2024.
The Red Bulls also structured that extension around a series of release mechanisms. Sky reported that the revised agreement contained three different exit clauses: €90 million for a 2025 move, €80 million for 2026, and €65 million from 2027.
That gives the clubs following him something to work with, although there is still a gap between interest and an actual transfer. No formal offer has reached RB, with current contacts reportedly taking place through intermediaries and representatives. Barcelona are considered the most concrete suitor at present, with Hansi Flick particularly attracted to a left-footed centre-back who can defend a high line and remain composed when building under pressure.
Chelsea's interest comes at a point when Leipzig are not simply waiting for a release clause to be triggered.
Lukeba is contracted until 2029, and the club can decide whether an offer meets their valuation rather than being forced to accept a predetermined fee. A winter move is also regarded as unlikely, with Die Roten Bullen keen to retain the defender for the remainder of the season.
For Lukeba, the attraction is clear. He has become one of the defining defenders of Leipzig's current side and, at 23, already combines Bundesliga experience with a profile that is particularly valuable to elite clubs: recovery speed, comfort defending space, and the technical ability to progress the ball from the back.
The next step is no longer about establishing whether there is a market for him. That market is already there.
The question is whether one of Europe's biggest clubs is prepared to turn that interest into a €60-65 million commitment.
