The German international has opened negotiations with RB Leipzig, yet personal family considerations and long-term career goals leave the captain’s future at the Red Bull Arena uncertain.
RB Leipzig captain David Raum has confirmed that discussions over his future are finally underway. Still, the German international is keeping his options open as he approaches the final months of his contract.
The 28-year-old left-back is tied to Leipzig until June 2027, meaning the club faces an important decision over one of its most influential players.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Sky Sport Germany, Raum revealed that Leipzig has recently contacted his representatives to begin discussing a potential extension.
"I think the exchange has now kind of gotten rolling after you reported on it. Then the club has now sought a conversation with my advisors."
While the development represents an encouraging step for Die Roten Bullen, the captain has made it clear that his next career decision will involve more than football alone.
Leipzig Finally Open Contract Discussions
Raum's contract situation has become an increasingly important issue for the Bundesliga side, particularly given his leadership role and importance to Martín Demichelis' team.
With less than a year remaining on his deal, the club risks entering the summer of 2027 without an agreement over his future.
However, Raum confirmed that communication with Leipzig's management is progressing.
The German international expects to meet managing director Marcel Schäfer soon to discuss the situation personally.
"We're in a very, very good and close exchange, almost friendly. We'll communicate completely openly there,"
His comments suggest that relations between the player and the club remain positive, even though no agreement has yet been reached.
Raum Refuses To Rule Out A Departure
Despite the encouraging talks, Raum is not ready to commit his future to Leipzig.
The defender acknowledged that his age and personal circumstances will play a significant role in determining his next move.
"I'm at an age where you make sure to pay attention to everything,"
He also revealed that his wife will be involved in the decision-making process.
"Where could we go, or do we stay here?" he added, outlining the question the couple will consider.
Those comments leave open the possibility of a departure, even if Raum remains happy at Leipzig.
For the captain, the next contract could shape an important stage of his career, making it a decision he does not intend to rush.
A Crucial Decision For Leipzig
Raum's situation presents Leipzig with a significant challenge.
The defender is not only an established Germany international but also a central figure in the dressing room, having taken on the captaincy and become one of the team's most important leaders.
His performances and influence make retaining him a priority, particularly as Demichelis attempts to establish greater consistency within the squad.
However, the Red Bulls must also consider the financial implications of allowing a key player to enter the final six months of his contract.
From January 2027, Raum would be eligible to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with clubs abroad if no extension is signed.
For now, there is no indication that he has decided to leave or that negotiations with another club are underway.
The next meeting with Schäfer could therefore prove decisive in determining whether Leipzig can convince their captain to commit his future to the club.
Raum has opened the door to staying, but he has also made one thing clear: every option remains on the table.
From here the stage only gets bigger.
