The French defender nears a Ligue 1 return as Leipzig seeks vital playing time to sharpen their prized prospect through a strategic loan devoid of purchase options.
El Chadaille Bitshiabu is on the verge of leaving RB Leipzig on loan, with talks between the Bundesliga club and RC Lens now well advanced.
According to Sky Sport Germany, the two clubs are close to reaching a final agreement that would see the 21-year-old defender spend the season in France. The deal is not yet completed, but negotiations have progressed to the point where a breakthrough is expected.
Importantly, the loan will not include a purchase option.
That detail makes Leipzig's intentions very clear. The club is not looking to use the move as a way of finding a buyer for Bitshiabu. Instead, the entire idea is to give the defender the playing time and experience he needs to continue his development, similar to what we suggested in our previous article.
Leipzig will also contribute part of Bitshiabu's salary during the loan.
For Bitshiabu, Lens could provide an environment that has been difficult to find in Leipzig. The Frenchman made only 14 appearances across all competitions last season and has found himself competing for minutes in an increasingly crowded centre-back group.
Willi Orbán remains one of the senior figures in the squad, while Castello Lukeba and Maxim Estève offer two more options who can play on the left side of the defence. With Lukeba and Estève both left-footed like Bitshiabu, the competition for that particular role has become even more demanding.
A season at Lens would change that equation.
The Ligue 1 side are returning to the Champions League, meaning Bitshiabu would have the chance to play regular first-team football while also experiencing European football at the highest level. For a 21-year-old defender whose priority at this stage is development, that could be more valuable than another season spent primarily competing for a place on the bench.
It also gives Die Roten Bullen a chance to monitor his progress in a competitive environment rather than making a permanent decision too early.
Bitshiabu joined RBL from Paris Saint-Germain in 2023 for around €15 million, having been regarded as one of the more promising young defenders to emerge from the French academy system. His development in Germany has not followed the most straightforward path, but the club clearly has not given up on his potential.
That is why the absence of a purchase option matters.
If the deal goes through, Leipzig still controls his future and can reassess his situation next summer after he has had the opportunity to play consistently and mature physically and tactically.
From Lens' perspective, it is an opportunity to strengthen their defence without committing to a major transfer fee. For Bitshiabu, it could be the first chance to establish himself as a regular senior defender.
And for Leipzig, it is a relatively simple calculation: give the player minutes now, keep control of his future, and see what he can become.
The agreement is not final yet, but with negotiations already at an advanced stage, Bitshiabu appears increasingly likely to spend the 2026/27 season in Lens.
