Konrad Laimer’s ruthless post-match reaction deepens the wounds for RB Leipzig, as the former fan favorite admits he craved a more dominant scoreline against his struggling former club.
RB Leipzig's humiliating 6-1 defeat against Bayern Munich has become even more painful after former midfielder Konrad Laimer admitted he felt no sympathy for his former club and would have preferred an even bigger win.
The Austrian international spent six years at Leipzig before joining Bayern on a free transfer in 2023. However, despite his strong connection to the Saxons, Laimer made it clear that his competitive instincts outweigh any personal attachment.
His remarks come at a particularly difficult moment for Die Roten Bullen, with Martín Demichelis' side facing serious questions about their ability to compete against Germany's strongest teams.
Laimer Admits He Wanted To Humiliate Leipzig Even Further
Speaking in the mixed zone after Saturday's match, Laimer acknowledged his affection for Leipzig but insisted there was no room for sympathy on the pitch.
"At the end of the day, you don't feel any pity."
The Bayern defender recalled enjoying his six years in Die Roten Bullen and seeing familiar faces again at the Allianz Arena.
But his attitude changed completely once the match began.
"Even if we're 3-0 up, I want to win by an even bigger margin. That's how I've always been."
For Leipzig supporters, those comments will be particularly difficult to accept after watching their former player celebrate another crushing defeat against the club where he established himself in the Bundesliga.
Laimer was also part of the Leipzig team that secured a memorable 3-1 victory in Munich in May 2023, even scoring against Bayern on that occasion.
Three years later, the balance of power looks very different.
Leipzig's Allianz Arena Nightmare Continues
Saturday's defeat was another damaging chapter in RB's recent history against Bayern.
Luis Díaz scored a hat-trick, while Aleksandar Pavlović, Michael Olise and Harry Kane also found the net. Andrija Maksimović's late consolation did little to disguise the scale of Leipzig's collapse.
Laimer suggested that Bayern's dominance at home has become a psychological obstacle for visiting teams.
"Everyone who comes here knows it's no fun playing against us."
He added that some opponents already carry unpleasant memories of their previous visits to the Allianz Arena.
Those words will resonate with Leipzig, which also suffered a 6-0 defeat against Bayern in last season's Bundesliga opener.
Across their last five league meetings with the record champions, the Red Bulls have now suffered four defeats and conceded 25 goals.
Demichelis Faces Serious Questions Before Real Madrid Clash
While Laimer celebrated Bayern's dominance, Leipzig were left searching for answers.
Sporting director Marcel Schäfer delivered a particularly harsh assessment after the final whistle, describing his team's performance as unacceptable and acknowledging the considerable gap between the sides.
Demichelis also apologised to the Red Bulls supporters following the defeat, which exposed defensive weaknesses that had been less apparent during recent victories over Eintracht Frankfurt and PSV Eindhoven.
The timing could hardly be worse.
Leipzig travel to face Real Madrid in the Champions League on Wednesday, giving Demichelis only a few days to address the problems exposed in Munich.
Laimer's comments may add to the frustration surrounding Saturday's result, but Leipzig's biggest concern is not what their former midfielder had to say.
It is how comprehensively Bayern dismantled a team that had arrived at the Allianz Arena believing it could compete.
For Demichelis and his players, the response against Real Madrid will now carry even greater significance.
From here the stage only gets bigger.
