After an early scare, a five-goal blitz propelled the Red Bulls to their third straight victory, silencing critics and placing the Argentine’s side within striking distance of the summit.

RB Leipzig has sent another strong message to their Bundesliga rivals, producing an emphatic 5-2 comeback victory over FC Augsburg on Saturday afternoon to move within three points of Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund.

Martín Demichelis's side recovered from conceding after just 37 seconds to secure their third consecutive Bundesliga victory, with Ezechiel Banzuzi, Christopher Nkunku, David Raum, Rômulo and Christoph Baumgartner all finding the net.

The result lifts the Red Bulls to third place for the moment, with 18 points from nine matches, just three behind Bayern and Dortmund, who both secured victories on Saturday.

After a difficult start to the campaign and considerable criticism of Demichelis, Leipzig are beginning to look like a genuine contenders for a place among Germany's leading clubs again.

Leipzig Overcome Early Shock To Dominate Augsburg

The afternoon could hardly have started worse for Leipzig.

Augsburg took the lead inside the opening minute when Anton Kade reacted quickest to a rebound after Maarten Vandevoordt had saved Arijon Ibrahimović's initial effort.

Die Roten Bullen needed time to recover, but Brajan Gruda eventually took control of the contest.

The German winger created the equaliser in the 34th minute, beating several defenders before finding Banzuzi, who fired a powerful left-footed shot into the bottom corner.

Just one minute later, Gruda produced another excellent piece of individual skill before delivering a clever cross for Nkunku to volley home from close range.

Leipzig completed their first-half turnaround when captain David Raum curled a superb free-kick over the Augsburg wall and into the net via the post in stoppage time.

The Red Bulls continued their dominance after the interval, with Nkunku turning provider for Rômulo's close-range finish in the 60th minute.

Demichelis then introduced Antonio Nusa and Baumgartner, and the substitutes combined almost immediately. Nusa delivered the final pass for the Austrian to make it 5-1 in the 66th minute.

Uchenna Ogundu scored Augsburg's second goal in stoppage time, but the visitors had long since lost control of the match.

Demichelis Is Beginning To Turn Leipzig's Season Around

Perhaps the most significant development is not simply the result, but the transformation taking place under Demichelis.

Earlier in the campaign, Leipzig struggled for consistency, particularly away from home. Questions were raised about the Argentine's tactical approach and whether he could get the best out of a squad containing considerable attacking talent.

Those concerns have not disappeared entirely, especially following the club's difficult Champions League results.

However, the Bundesliga performances now tell a different story.

The Red Bulls have won six of their opening nine league matches, including all five at the Red Bull Arena. Their attack has become increasingly productive, while Demichelis is finding ways to accommodate several creative players.

Gruda's outstanding performance against Augsburg, Nkunku's goal and assist, and Baumgartner's immediate impact from the bench demonstrate the attacking options now available to the coach.

The return of Nkunku and Baumgartner to full fitness has also strengthened a squad that was already benefiting from Nusa's excellent form.

Most importantly, Leipzig are beginning to respond convincingly to setbacks. Wednesday's painful 3-2 Champions League defeat against Manchester City could have disrupted their momentum, but Saturday's performance showed a team capable of reacting with authority.

Leipzig Are Closing In On Bayern And Dortmund

The Bundesliga standings now provide a compelling picture of Leipzig's recovery.

Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund remain at the top with 21 points each, but Die Roten Bullen have reduced the gap to just three.

For a team that began the season with three defeats in its opening six league matches, reaching third place after nine games represents significant progress.

The victory also extends Leipzig's perfect Bundesliga home record, although Augsburg became the first league visitors to score at the Red Bull Arena this season.

There is still work to do defensively, and Demichelis's side must eventually reproduce their domestic form against stronger European opposition.

Nevertheless, the signs of improvement are becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.

Leipzig is no longer simply trying to recover from a disappointing start. They are climbing back towards the Bundesliga's leading positions and putting pressure on the two clubs traditionally expected to compete for the title.

Demichelis still has plenty to prove, but the direction of his team is becoming clearer.

After weeks of uncertainty, Leipzig is looking like a club ready to compete among Germany's elite once again.
