The Spanish striker’s Bundesliga breakthrough stalls following a training ground setback, leaving RB Leipzig’s depleted frontline searching for solutions as the promising youngster begins his recovery.
Marc Guiu's first weeks at RB Leipzig have been interrupted just as the young striker was beginning to settle into his new surroundings.
The 20-year-old will be unavailable for several weeks after suffering a muscle injury to his left hamstring during training this week. For Leipzig, it is another frustrating setback in a season that has already brought several injury concerns, while for Guiu it represents an untimely pause at the beginning of an important new chapter.
Guiu joined Leipzig from Chelsea on a permanent deal in September, signing a contract until 2031. The club sees the Spanish youth international as a long-term part of their attacking plans, with his intensity, pace, and willingness to work without the ball fitting the profile Leipzig wanted to add to their squad.
His introduction under Martin Demichelis had been gradual.
Guiu made his Bundesliga debut from the bench in the 3-1 defeat to Werder Bremen before being handed his first start in the Champions League against Como. Leipzig and Marc endured a difficult evening in Italy, losing 4-1.
Demichelis gave Guiu 59 minutes to lead the line and experience the demands of playing at the highest level. The performance wasn’t quite there yet, but the bigger takeaway is the opportunity: this was the first real test of how Guiu can adapt to Leipzig’s attacking structure. There will be plenty more to come as his career at the club is only just beginning.
He was then an unused substitute in Leipzig's emphatic 5-0 victory over Hamburger SV.
The injury now means another period away from competitive football just as he was beginning to understand what Demichelis expects from him.
That is particularly frustrating because Guiu was brought in to give the Red Bulls another option in the centre-forward position. His physical presence and aggressive running offer a different profile in attack, while his age means the club was also thinking beyond the immediate season when they committed to a long-term deal.
The timing also adds to the pressure on an already stretched squad.
Assan Ouédraogo has been ruled out until at least January following shoulder surgery, while Christoph Baumgartner and Rocco Reitz have also spent time on the sidelines.
Die Roten Bullen have therefore had to keep adapting their plans while Demichelis continues to build his team.
For Guiu, however, there is little value in rushing the comeback. Hamstring injuries can require careful management, particularly for a young player whose first priority is to establish himself physically and tactically in a new league.
His Leipzig career has barely had the chance to begin.
Now the Spaniard will have to wait several weeks before he can continue it.
