The French forward joins the traveling squad in Gelsenkirchen as Martín Demichelis regains crucial attacking depth, though a cautious approach remains for the recently sidelined star.
RB Leipzig have received a significant injury boost ahead of Saturday's Bundesliga clash against Schalke 04, with Christopher Nkunku returning to the squad after recovering from an adductor problem.
The French forward resumed full team training on Friday and has been cleared to travel to Gelsenkirchen, although head coach Martín Demichelis intends to introduce him gradually.
Christoph Baumgartner is also available following his match-winning performance against Rot-Weiss Essen in the DFB-Pokal, but the Red Bulls will remain without Maxime Estève, Assan Ouédraogo and Marc Guiu.
Nkunku Back In The Squad After Adductor Injury
Nkunku's return provides Demichelis with another attacking option as Leipzig attempt to secure their first away points of the Bundesliga season.
The 28-year-old has been sidelined by adductor problems, missing the recent matches against Elversberg and Rot-Weiss Essen.
However, after successfully completing Friday's team training session, Nkunku has been included in the travelling squad for Saturday's encounter.
The former Chelsea and AC Milan attacker is initially expected to start on the bench, with Leipzig's coaching staff taking a cautious approach to his return.
His availability is nevertheless encouraging for a team that has relied heavily on Antonio Nusa, Rômulo and Tidiam Gomis in recent weeks.
Nkunku's ability to operate behind a central striker or move into more advanced positions gives Demichelis additional flexibility, particularly if Leipzig needs to change their attacking structure during the second half.
Baumgartner Still Not Ready To Start
Baumgartner will also begin Saturday's match among the substitutes despite his decisive contribution against Essen on Tuesday.
The Austrian midfielder scored twice in the closing stages to complete Leipzig's remarkable 2-1 comeback after they had fallen behind and been reduced to ten men.
His goals came after he entered the match at half-time, with the 27-year-old playing approximately 30 minutes as Leipzig continued to manage his return from a lengthy injury absence.
Baumgartner missed around four and a half months before returning to competitive action, and Demichelis is determined not to increase his workload too quickly.
The Leipzig coach confirmed that the midfielder is feeling good and improving every day, but decisions regarding his playing time will continue to be made according to his physical condition.
For now, another substitute appearance is planned.
Baumgartner has already made an impact since his return, contributing an assist against Real Madrid, scoring against Elversberg and then producing his decisive brace in Essen.
His recent performances have strengthened Leipzig's attacking options, even if he is not yet ready to complete a full match.
Estève Ruled Out As Leipzig Avoid Risks
The Red Bulls will have to wait longer for Maxime Estève's return.
The French defender sustained a knock during the 4-0 Bundesliga victory over Elversberg and has not recovered sufficiently to feature against Schalke.
Although Estève is making progress, Demichelis confirmed that the coaching staff will not rush him back into action.
"We're not taking any risks."
His absence reduces Leipzig's defensive options, particularly following the demanding cup encounter in Essen, where the team played the entire second half with ten men after Nicolas Seiwald's dismissal.
Assan Ouédraogo also remains unavailable due to a capsule injury in his right shoulder.
Meanwhile, Marc Guiu continues his recovery from a muscular problem and has not yet been cleared to return.
Demichelis Gains Important Attacking Options
Despite the three absences, Leipzig's attacking situation has improved considerably ahead of the trip to Schalke.
Nkunku's return and Baumgartner's growing involvement provide Demichelis with two experienced alternatives capable of influencing matches from the bench.
That could prove particularly valuable against a Schalke side that have struggled offensively but have made themselves difficult to break down at home.
The newly promoted club has yet to score in their opening three Bundesliga home matches, although they have already held Bayern Munich and Elversberg to goalless draws.
Die Roten Bullen, meanwhile, have scored 20 goals in their opening seven league fixtures but remain without an away point.
With Nkunku available again and Baumgartner continuing his recovery, Demichelis will have more options to alter the game if Leipzig struggle to turn their attacking superiority into goals.
