Smarting from a lackluster defeat at Bremen, Martín Demichelis’ side must rediscover their signature intensity and tactical edge to navigate mounting injuries and a crucial European opener.
There is little time for RB Leipzig to wonder which version of themselves they are.
Four days after an unsettling defeat at Werder Bremen, Die Roten Bullen return to action in Europe, with Como 1907 waiting in their Champions League opener. It is an opportunity, but also a test: was Bremen simply an off day, or did it expose problems that Leipzig has yet to solve?
That question now follows Martín Demichelis into Italy.
The 3-1 defeat was not damaging because of the scoreline alone. It was the manner of the performance that made it difficult to ignore. The Red Bulls looked short of intensity, struggled to break down a compact opponent, and lacked the aggression that has traditionally been central to the club's identity.
That was a real wake-up call, and perhaps it came at the right time.
The timing could hardly be more appropriate. Como offers Leipzig a chance to respond before the Bundesliga schedule becomes significantly more demanding.
There are legitimate explanations for the uneven start. Leipzig's squad has changed considerably, with new arrivals still adapting to Demichelis' ideas and several important players unavailable through injury. Christoph Baumgartner, Rômulo, Assan Ouédraogo and Abdoul Koné have all been sidelined, while Castello Lukeba, Rocco Reitz and Brajan Gruda have added to the growing list of absentees.
But injuries cannot explain everything.
What Leipzig need most against Como is not necessarily another tactical innovation. They need to rediscover their edge.
Against Bremen, possession became almost meaningless because it lacked purpose. Leipzig could dominate the ball without consistently threatening the opposition. Their passing became predictable, their movement easier to defend and their attacks too dependent on individual moments.
That is where Como becomes particularly interesting.
The Italian side represents a different challenge, but Leipzig cannot afford another performance in which they allow the opponent to dictate the physical and emotional rhythm of the game. Champions League football demands a higher level of concentration, particularly from a team still trying to establish its identity under a new coach.
The attacking balance will also be worth watching.
Christopher Nkunku is still finding his rhythm after returning to the starting XI, while Johan Bakayoko has an opportunity to become increasingly important with other attacking options unavailable. Leipzig have talent across the front line, but talent has not been the issue in Bremen. Turning that talent into sustained pressure has.
And then there is the defensive side.
Leipzig cannot afford another afternoon in which lapses of concentration undo long periods of possession. Their margin for error will shrink considerably as the schedule progresses, with Bayer Leverkusen, Eintracht Frankfurt, PSV Eindhoven, Bayern Munich, and Real Madrid among the challenges ahead.
That makes Como more than a European opener.
It is the first chance to see how Leipzig responds when their confidence has been challenged.
We need to quickly draw the right lessons from this game.
That is precisely what Leipzig must now demonstrate.
The victory over Gladbach showed what this team can look like when the intensity, movement, and aggression are present. Bremen showed how ordinary Leipzig can become when those qualities disappear.
The result in Como will not define the season. But the performance could tell us a great deal about the direction Leipzig are heading.
Because the question is no longer whether they can play well.
It is whether they can do it consistently.
