Spurned chances and a clinical masterclass from former star Yan Diomande left Martín Demichelis’ side reeling at the Bernabéu, intensifying the pressure on their European campaign.

RB Leipzig suffered their second heavy defeat in five days after losing 4-1 to Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu on Wednesday evening, despite producing a much-improved performance following their humiliation against Bayern Munich.

Martín Demichelis' side competed impressively during the opening 45 minutes, creating several opportunities to take the lead. However, Real Madrid's clinical finishing eventually proved decisive, with former Leipzig winger Yan Diomande delivering the final blow.

The result leaves the Red Bulls with just three points from their opening three Champions League matches and raises the stakes ahead of their next European encounter against Manchester City.

Leipzig Waste Their Chances Before Madrid Take Control

After conceding six goals against Bayern, RB Leipzig approached the encounter with greater discipline and intensity.

The visitors pressed aggressively, defended more compactly and caused Madrid problems with their movement in transition.

Rômulo came close to opening the scoring in the 28th minute, forcing Thibaut Courtois into an important save.

Christopher Nkunku then had an even better opportunity shortly before half-time after being released by David Raum, but the Frenchman was denied in a one-on-one situation.

Those missed chances proved costly.

In the 44th minute, Maarten Vandevoordt saved Arda Güler's initial effort, but Bernardo Silva reacted quickest to convert the rebound.

Madrid doubled their advantage shortly after the restart when Güler finished from close range following Kylian Mbappé's headed pass in the 52nd minute.

Despite Die Roten Bullen's encouraging first-half performance, the Spanish giants had established control.

Former Leipzig Star Diomande Delivers The Final Blow

The closing stages brought another painful reminder of Leipzig's defensive vulnerability.

Diomande, who left Leipzig for Madrid during the summer, entered the match in the 70th minute and immediately added another attacking threat.

In the 83rd minute, the Ivorian assisted Mbappé, who curled a superb effort into the far corner to make it 3-0.

Die Roten Bullen's responded two minutes later through Tidiam Gomis, who finished calmly after being played through by Christoph Baumgartner.

However, any hope of a late comeback disappeared almost immediately.

Diomande scored Madrid's fourth in the 87th minute with an outstanding first-time volley, completing a memorable performance against his former club.

The winger finished with a goal and an assist, adding to Leipzig's disappointment on an already difficult evening.

Demichelis Sees Progress Despite Another Heavy Defeat

Although the final scoreline was disappointing, Demichelis insisted that his team's performance represented a significant improvement compared with the Bayern defeat.

"Compared to Munich, it was a completely different performance,"

The Argentine explained after the match.

He praised Leipzig's compactness and their ability to compete with Madrid, particularly during the first half.

There was also a positive moment for Christoph Baumgartner, who returned after 158 days on the sidelines and immediately contributed an assist for Gomis.

Nevertheless, the statistics underline Leipzig's challenge. Madrid registered 18 shots compared with the German side's 11 and dominated possession with more than 64%.

For Demichelis, the bigger concern is that Leipzig has now conceded ten goals across their last two matches.

Their Champions League campaign also remains uncertain, with defeats against Como and Madrid leaving them on three points.

Next up in Europe is a home encounter against Manchester City on November 4, another formidable opponent.

The Red Bulls have shown glimpses of their potential, but converting promising performances into results is becoming increasingly urgent.

From here the stage only gets bigger.
