Following a goal-scoring return from injury, the Brazilian striker aims to surpass last season’s tally while eyeing a milestone European debut during a high-stakes October for RB Leipzig.
RB Leipzig striker Rômulo is determined to surpass his nine Bundesliga goals from last season as he prepares for a demanding October that could also bring his Champions League debut.
The Brazilian missed Leipzig's opening two matches through injury but made an immediate impact on his return against Hamburger SV. Just three minutes after coming off the bench, he won possession near the halfway line, rounded goalkeeper Daniel Heuer Fernandes, and scored his first league goal of the campaign.
Now, with Eintracht Frankfurt visiting on Saturday and PSV Eindhoven awaiting in the Champions League, Rômulo believes he is ready to take another step forward.
Rômulo Wants To Build On Nine Goals
Rômulo's nine Bundesliga goals in his debut season represented a promising start to life in Germany. For comparison, Brazilian legend Giovane Elber scored eight in his first Bundesliga campaign before establishing himself as one of the competition's most prolific forwards.
But Rômulo is not satisfied with simply matching last year's numbers.
"It was a good first season, but I'm sure I can do even better. Now I want more."
The striker has deliberately avoided setting a specific goalscoring target. His ambition is to keep improving rather than consider his season successful once he reaches a particular number.
That mentality could be important for Die Roten Bullen, who need more consistent attacking contributions after an uneven opening to the campaign.
Demichelis Working On His Development
Rômulo has also spoken positively about working with Martín Demichelis, who took charge during the summer.
The Argentine's experience as a former top-level player has proved particularly useful in helping the striker refine his movement.
Their discussions focus on when Rômulo should attack space, when to hold his position and how to make himself more effective inside the penalty area.
Those adjustments could help him become a more reliable goalscorer in his second season.
Rômulo also feels increasingly settled in Leipzig after more than a year in Germany, something he believes has improved his performances on the pitch.
With the team facing matches every three or four days throughout October, his return to fitness gives Demichelis another important attacking option.
Champions League Dream Within Reach
Beyond his Bundesliga ambitions, Rômulo is preparing for a potentially unforgettable moment.
The Brazilian missed the Red Bulls' Champions League opener against Como because of an injury, but he could make his debut in the competition against PSV Eindhoven.
Growing up in Brazil, he watched players such as Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar compete in Europe's biggest club tournament.
Now he is preparing to experience that stage himself, with family and friends expected to attend the PSV match.
"Thinking about it makes me happy. It's a dream come true,"
First, however, Leipzig must face Frankfurt today, where victory would secure an eighth consecutive Bundesliga home win and establish a new club record.
For Rômulo, the immediate objective is to help his team build momentum while continuing his own development.
After an injury-disrupted start, the Brazilian finally has the opportunity to turn his ambitions into performances.
From here the stage only gets bigger.
