A sensational hat-trick against Frankfurt signals the Frenchman’s resurgence, as the former Bundesliga Player of the Season rediscovers his devastating finishing touch back in familiar Leipzig colors.

Back home. Back among the goals. Back at the club where Europe first discovered just how special he could be.

Christopher Nkunku's return to RB Leipzig was supposed to be an opportunity to rebuild his career after three frustrating years away. Six appearances later, the 28-year-old is already providing compelling evidence that the player who once dominated the Bundesliga has not disappeared.

His sensational first-half hat-trick in Saturday's 6-0 demolition of Eintracht Frankfurt took him to six goal contributions in six appearances since returning to Leipzig.

More importantly, it raised a question that would have seemed premature only a few weeks ago: are we witnessing the resurgence of the real Christopher Nkunku?

Back Where Everything Clicked

When Nkunku left Leipzig for Chelsea in 2023, he was one of Europe's most exciting attacking players.

During his first spell in Germany, the Frenchman recorded 70 goals and 56 assists in 172 competitive appearances, won two DFB-Pokal titles and established himself as a Bundesliga Player of the Season.

Chelsea paid approximately €60 million to sign him, but injuries repeatedly interrupted his progress in London. A subsequent move to AC Milan failed to restore the consistency that had once made him so dangerous.

By the time Die Roten Bullen brought him back on loan in August, Nkunku was no longer arriving as an emerging superstar. He was a player looking to rediscover his confidence.

In September, he acknowledged that enjoying football again had become one of his priorities.

His first goal since returning, against Hamburger SV, brought back the familiar balloon celebration. Against Frankfurt, something even more significant returned: the devastating finishing that once made him one of the Bundesliga's most feared attackers.

Three goals before half-time, including two in the space of three minutes, turned an already comfortable Leipzig lead into a rout.

It was a reminder of what Nkunku can produce when he plays with freedom and conviction.

Six Games Are Enough To Start Believing

There is a difference between a player enjoying a good afternoon and one rediscovering his identity.

Nkunku's six goal contributions in six appearances suggest that Saturday's hat-trick was not an isolated moment.

His influence has been growing since the opening weeks of the season, and his understanding of Leipzig's attacking movements is becoming increasingly apparent.

Playing behind Rômulo against Frankfurt, Nkunku benefited from the movement of Antonio Nusa and the space created by the Red Bulls' aggressive attacking approach.

That is where the Frenchman has traditionally been at his most dangerous: operating between midfield and attack, finding pockets of space and arriving in scoring positions rather than remaining fixed as a conventional striker.

For Martín Demichelis, Nkunku's resurgence could be transformative.

RB have struggled for consistency this season, but an in-form Nkunku gives them a player capable of deciding matches through individual quality.

The challenge is maintaining that level against stronger opposition, particularly with PSV Eindhoven, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid awaiting in October.

Leipzig Have The Chance To Keep Him

There is another reason Nkunku's performances matter beyond the immediate results.

Leipzig negotiated an option to make his return from AC Milan permanent when they completed the season-long loan in August.

According to multiple reports, the purchase option is worth approximately €28 million, allowing Leipzig to secure his services beyond June 2027 without reopening negotiations over a transfer fee.

That figure looks increasingly interesting.

Nkunku is 28, and his injury history cannot be ignored. Six appearances are not enough to conclude that he has permanently recovered the form that made him a Bundesliga superstar.

But Die Roten Bullen already know what his best football looks like, and they are beginning to see it again.

If he continues producing at this level, the decision over his future could become considerably easier.

The Frenchman returned because the German side offered something Chelsea and Milan could not: familiarity, confidence, and an environment in which he had already proven himself.

Now he has an opportunity to turn that reunion into something permanent.

Perhaps the most exciting part is that Nkunku does not need to become the player he was in 2022.

He needs to show that the quality which made him special is still there.

Six games into his return, the signs are difficult to ignore.

The balloon is back. The goals are back. And perhaps, finally, so is the real Christopher Nkunku.

From here the stage only gets bigger.
