Celtic have produced some quality players in their youth system over the years. Callum McGregor and Kieran Tierney are integral parts of the first team right now. And while James Forrest has transitioned into a squad role in recent times, he remains part of the side and has made 561 appearances for the Hoops over the course of his career, never playing for another team.
Of course, there are several players who did not make it through the Celtic youth system but ended up making it elsewhere. Andy Robertson might be the most famous example of that.
Robertson grew up supporting Celtic and was part of the youth system early in his career. But he was allowed to leave. The belief is that there were those at the club who felt that he did not have the physical attributes to make it in the senior game.
Well, they have been proven very wrong. Robertson has not only gone on to establish himself as a senior pro, but he is a Liverpool legend, having won everything possible with the Reds.
His time with Liverpool might be coming to an end though. Robertson has made just five starts in the Premier League this season. And his current contract with the Anfield side ends in the summer of 2026.
Robertson has never made it a secret that he would like to pull on the Celtic shirt at some point in his career. This summer might be the perfect opportunity to do that. But there is interest from other clubs in his signature as well.
According to Football Insider, Tottenham Hotspur are still keen to sign Robertson despite their failed attempt in January. Spurs are hopeful of being able to convince him to make the move this summer if they remain in the Premier League.
A move to Tottenham was touted in the winter as well. But it did not end up materialising. And with Spurs completely out of form at the moment, while teams below them are starting to get some results, there is a genuine chance of them getting relegated this.
Something like this would be unthinkable for a traditional Big Six side. But it might be time to stop considering Tottenham in that bracket and include someone like Aston Villa or Newcastle United.
As for Celtic, a move for Robertson is somewhat far-fetched to begin with. The club already have Tierney as a left-back. Would they bring in another quality option in that position for an astronomical wage packet?
