Celtic's recruitment since the departure of Ange Postecoglou has come under heavy criticism. There have been very few hits and far too many misses. But it looks like the club got it right last summer when they decided to sign Benjamin Nygren.
Celtic did something that they often don't do for some reason, which is sign an in-form player. The results have been there for all to see.
Nygren had scored a combined 28 goals in the previous two seasons for FC Nordsjaelland before joining Celtic. And he has carried on that momentum in Scotland as well.
Nygren has scored 19 goals and provided seven assists so far for Celtic this season. That is a great return for a player who has played most of his football in the middle of the park.
Of course, when you do well for Celtic, clubs down south often take notice. We have seen many of the club's best performers head to England over the years, and have mixed results.
Odsonne Edouard joined Crystal Palace. Matt O'Riley moved to Brighton & Hove Albion. Ryan Christie signed for Bournemouth. Kris Ajer headed for Brentford. Kieran Tierney made a record move to Arsenal. The list goes on. Could Nygren find himself on it someday?
The possibility is very much there. Reports have emerged recently suggesting that Manchester United have taken an interest in Nygren.
Nygren was recently asked about the Man Utd rumours. According to SportBladet, he said: "It's really just fun and a sign that you've done something good. I'm always humble, I'm always working hard to get better every day and I really enjoy Celtic. But like every other footballer, I have a dream to get as far as possible with my football and play in the biggest leagues."
That was somewhat of a non-answer from Nygren. He maintained that he is happy at Celtic. But at the same time, he did not rule out the possibility of moving to a bigger league. That sounds as if the opportunity comes around, he would consider it, as you would expect him to.
Of course, someone like Nygren leaving would be a problem for Celtic. It is hard to imagine where they would be right now, if not for his 19 goals from midfield this season.
Nygren has come in and immediately established himself as an integral part of this team. He has something that not many midfielders do, which is finding a way to be in the right place, at the right time, on a consistent basis.
His ability is almost Kyogo-esque, except this time around, that movement is coming from a midfielder. One could argue that it is even more impressive.
Let's hope that Nygren continues to score and assist for Celtic as long as he is at the club. As for that potential move to Manchester United, we will cross that bridge if or when we come to it.
