Ange Postecoglou might have spent just two seasons at Celtic but he is one of the most popular managers in club history. There is a good reason for that as well. One cannot forget the circumstances under which he arrived.
Celtic had not only finished trophyless, but they had also finished 25 points behind the Rangers in the league in the 20/21 campaign. Even the most optimistic fans were predicting a two-year rebuild just to get back to challenging.
And after months of chasing Eddie Howe, the club failed to convince him to become Celtic manager. They did not linger on the disappointment for too long though and appointed Postecoglou.
The appointment was met with a lot of scepticism but Postecoglou did not take too long to show what he was capable of. He oversaw a summer rebuild, and his keen eye for talent and understanding of the Asian talent pool were instrumental in helping Celtic put together a squad that was able to compete that very season.
His brand of football and ability to connect with the supporters on a human level also made him a popular figure at Parkhead.
Martin O'Neill is another manager who falls under that category. Someone who is so likeable that he can get his team to buy in quickly and squeeze results out, even when he is not working with a great squad.
According to The Celtic Way, Postecoglou said about O'Neill: “Martin is one in a million.
“I was fortunate enough to bump into him a few times when I was up there and he was always very, very respectful towards me. What a man! What a great storyteller!
“I’m sure he’s one of these guys who has a dressing room full of players that don’t want to let him down. There has been a couple of different moments where you have seen that this season. He's got them into position again where they can have success.”
Brendan Rodgers, a proven winner at Celtic, had struggled to get a tune out of this team earlier in the season. They were eight points behind Hearts by the time he handed in his resignation. The less said about Wilfried Nancy's run, the better, as he was able to win just two of his eight games in charge and was sacked after just 33 days in charge.
O'Neill is most certainly overdelivering at the moment. Of course, the performances have not been anything to write home about. But he is getting the results. It also feels like Celtic's rivals in the title race are starting to feel the pressure in the final stretch of the season, as they are not used to getting over the finish line. The Hoops are.
In the summer, Celtic will say goodbye to O'Neill again. He is 74 years old and is not the long-term solution, no matter how much the fans might want to see him continue. But it will be amazing if he can win a couple more trophies before heading for what is most likely going to be his retirement. The Northern Irishman is definitely one in a million.
