The Paraguayan international currently playing for Brazilian side Sao Paulo has been named as a top target for Celtic.

There are a number of areas where Celtic will be looking to strengthen this summer. One of them is the midfield, which look a bit different come next season. It remains to be seen what the future holds for Reo Hatate, who has been linked with a move away on-and-off for a while now.

Paulo Bernardo cannot be particularly happy with his lack of game time either and might look for a change of scenery. And it remains to be seen if Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is offered the one-year extension clause that is in his contract.

So, Celtic could find themselves looking to strengthen in the middle of the park this summer. They have already been linked with David Watson of Kilmarnock as a potential signing. But now, it looks like they have their sights set beyond Europe when it comes to their search for reinforcements in midfield.

According to Football Insider, Celtic have set their sights on a move to sign Damian Bobadilla ahead of the summer transfer window. Clubs across Europe are watching the Sao Paulo midfielder closely and have been impressed by his performances in the Brazilian league so far this season.

The report goes on to describe Bobadilla as a 'top summer target' for Celtic. That would suggest that the midfielder is currently near the top of the club's transfer wishlist.

Sao Paulo currently sit at second in the Brazilian Serie A table, only behind Palmeiras on goal difference. Bobadilla has played his part in helping his club make a strong start to the campaign.

He has scored and assisted twice each in 16 appearances across all competitions this season. He has also played as a central midfielder, as a defensive midfielder and on both the left and right in the middle of the park as well.

Celtic could certainly do with that kind of versatility. In the grand scheme of things, they have been looking to bring in a suitable defensive midfielder for quite some time but have never really succeeded.

It is also worth mentioning that Bobadilla is a regular feature at the international level for Paraguay and has made 17 appearances for his national team.

Bobadilla is likely to represent Paraguay at the World Cup as well. That will only increase his transfer value. And with tough rival interest in his signature, it won't be easy for Celtic to sign him. Let's see if they make a legitimate push for his signature or not.
