Celtic will have to have a few new strikers atop their summer transfer wishlist. The Hoops brought in Tomas Cvancara and Junior Adamu on loan deals with options to buy in the winter window. But neither has been able to convince that they can be the consistent goalscorer that the club need at the moment.
Martin O'Neill will be trying to get them past the finish line with the options available to him. But in the long run, Celtic must find a way to add more goals to their forward ranks.
One mistake that the club have made in recent times is going after strikers who are out of form. That can be said for Kelechi Iheanacho, Cvancara and Adamu. None of them was scoring consistently before joining the Hoops. So, it should not come as a major surprise when they failed to do so in the green-and-white jersey as well.
So, Celtic must look at strikers who are scoring at the moment and try to sign them rather than relying on past reputations or leagues they are playing in.
Callum Boyle of 67 Hail Hail recently suggested Dion Beljo of Dinamo Zagreb as someone Celtic should look at.
Beljo is 24 years old and enjoying a brilliant run of form at the moment. In the Croatian league, he has scored 17 goals and provided three assists from 26 appearances, out of which 22 were starts. In the Europa League, he managed to score five times in eight games.
Overall, he has scored 23 times across all competitions and averaged a goal every 101 minutes of action.
That is the kind of output that Celtic should be looking for when they go in search of a leading number 9 in the summer transfer window.
It is worth mentioning though that Celtic would not be the only ones looking to sign someone like Beljo, considering the kind of form that he has shown this season. Other clubs across Europe would have taken notice as well, especially on the back of his performances in the Europa League.
So, Celtic might need to shell out a decent transfer fee if they want to sign Beljo. But with the squad in need of a revamp in the summer, it is about time that they splash out on a premium striker rather than try to fix the gaping hole with loan signings or past-their-prime free agents.
