Chris Sutton has made a name for himself in the media since retiring from the pitch. He has only enhanced his reputation amongst the Celtic fans by presenting their point of view in the mainstream, something that seemed to be missing at times in the past.
That being said, Sutton's recent take on Kasper Schmeichel's long-term injury and potential retirement did end up dividing the opinion of even the Celtic support.
Schmeichel came out himself, instead of going through the club, to announce that he had picked up a serious injury and was looking at a 10-12 month rehab. He also admitted that it could mean that he had already played his last game of professional football.
Of course, any injury is a worry for a professional footballer. Schmeichel is 39 years old and has struggled with form for quite some time now. It is not hard to see why this could potentially turn out to be a career-ending one.
It has been clear for a while that something is wrong with Schmeichel. Since that injury last year, picked up while away on international duty, his numbers have dipped considerably. It seems he has been playing with the issue, which was further aggravated recently in the game against VfB Stuttgart.
Sutton was not completely impressed with how the entire thing was handled. In fact, he went on to term it as 'selfish' on the part of Schmeichel.
We previously covered his comments here. According to the Daily Record, Sutton said:
“The bottom line is that is not going to appease Celtic fans sitting there scratching their heads the same as myself and thinking: Why has he not even mentioned the club who employ him? He’s not been right and he’s sort of using the club playing when he knows he’s not fit to serve his own purpose? Really?
“It seemed selfish to me, himself over the club. We all naturally look after ourselves, but the team comes first at all times."
Martin O'Neill was his good-natured self when reacting to Sutton's comments on the situation. That being said, he did not sound particularly pleased with his former striker either. According to CeltsAreHere, the Celtic manager said:
“I like Chris. I like Chris a lot, but not that much!
“Chris is entitled his own opinion, but it’s no serious issue for me.
“I don’t know whether he would have been in a position to know that it was all about Denmark. I don’t know.
“I haven’t spoken to Chris. I will do now, for him to mind his own business. No, it’s not. He’s entitled an opinion.”
A lot of Celtic fans did not agree with Sutton's take on the matter either. At the end of the day, Schmeichel is staring at potential retirement. That is always the case for a 39-year-old. But it is never good to see someone being forced into making such a decision, which could very possibly happen with the Danish goalkeeper.
Schmeichel has had a phenomenal career though. He had a legendary run with Leicester City, winning the Premier League with the Foxes against all odds and expectations. He also turned out for clubs like Celtic, Anderlecht, Nice, Manchester City and more.
Schmeichel's time as a Celtic player is pretty much over after that announcement. But we would like to wish him the best of luck in his recovery and hope to see him back on the pitch someday, so that he can retire on his own terms.
As for Sutton, you cannot necessarily disagree with his take either. That being said, his take on the matter did sound a bit harsh, especially on someone who seems to be dealing with the idea that injury could force him to retire.
