A key Celtic starter is now a doubt to face the Rangers, after he picked up an injury in the game against Aberdeen.

Celtic FC Roundtable Round-up: Aberdeen review, David Watson interest, Balikwisha exit?

Once again, Celtic got themselves a narrow win, 2-1, against Aberdeen away at Pittodrie Stadium. Martin O'Neill has proven himself to be a master of squeezing out such results, even though the performances have rarely met expectations in recent weeks.

It was not all positive coming out of the match against Aberdeen. In fact, one of the goalscorers on the day picked up an injury and is now a doubt to face the Rangers away at Ibrox in the Scottish Cup this weekend.

It was Kieran Tierney who had put Celtic ahead in the fifth minute of the game. In recent weeks, the left-back has been for O'Neill's side, coming up clutch in vital moments. He was also on the scoresheet against the Rangers last weekend in the 2-2 draw at Ibrox, as the Hoops came back from a couple of goals down in the second half.

Unfortunately, it might not get the chance to do the same this weekend. That is because he appeared to pick up an injury against Aberdeen after a stamp from Dons' Toyosi Olusanya. He was taken off for Marcelo Saracchi in the 65th minute.

According a report from Stephen McGowan for The Celtic Way, the Hoops now face an anxious wait to establish the full extent of Tierney’s foot injury. The Scottish international's participation in Sunday’s Scottish Cup quarter-final against Rangers at Ibrox is in doubt. He is set to undergo further checks to establish the nature and extent of the damage.

Even if it does not prove to be a long-term issue, it could be enough for Tierney to miss the game against the Rangers, which is just a couple of days away. Of course, that would not be ideal for Celtic.

Tierney had a slow start to the campaign but has looked back to his best in recent times. Saracchi is a very capable replacement, but on occasions like this, you want your most experienced players around.

As a result, if Tierney does miss the Scottish Cup matchup at Ibrox, it would come as a huge miss for Celtic. They are already missing other experienced names like Cameron Carter-Vickers and Alistair Johnston, two players who have shown the ability to perform in Glasgow derbies in the past.

Of course, O'Neill won't be depending on one player to determine the result of the Ibrox trip. Celtic will have to deal with whatever comes their way leading into the matchup and adjust accordingly.
