The Irishman has been named as the favourite to become the next Celtic manager ahead of Jens Berthel Askou.

Celtic FC Roundtable Round-up: Interest in trio plus John Beaton named ref vs Motherwell

Celtic's sights will be on their upcoming game against Motherwell. It won't be an easy task to get a result, even with home advantage at play. The opposition have played some brilliant football this season, while still being the best defensive team in the Scottish Premiership.

Unsurprisingly, Motherwell's performances have earned their manager Jens Berthel Askou a lot of plaudits. They have also come with links to the Celtic job, which is set to become available in the summer when Martin O'Neill's run as interim boss comes to an end.

Askou could be an excellent pick to be the next Celtic manager, although doing a job at Parkhead is vastly different from what he has been able to achieve at Fir Park.

For a little while, it had looked like Askou was the likeliest candidate to get the Celtic job. But now, a new frontrunner appears to have emerged for the Parkhead job.

According to The Guardian, Robbie Keane is the frontrunner to become the next Celtic manager. The Parkhead powerbrokers believe that the Irishman could be receptive to moving to Glasgow.

There is expected to be interest from teams down in England as well though. In fact, Tottenham Hotspur were said to be in the mix for Keane after Thomas Frank was sacked and Igor Tudor was hired to replace him.

There is a good chance that Spurs could end up looking for another manager soon, as they have failed to produce results under Tudor as well.

It is safe to say that Keane has been impressive at the start of his managerial career. He is currently the head coach of Ferencvaros. Before that, he was with Maccabi Tel Aviv. The Irishman has enjoyed success at both places and now looks to be in a prime position to take the next step in his career.

Celtic seem to be hoping that Parkhead turns out to be his next destination. And it is worth mentioning that Keane has had a stint in Glasgow already, albeit only on loan.

He did enjoy success as a player during that brief spell in Scotland. Could he do the same as a coach? We will find out if he does end up taking the Celtic job.

Of course, the Hoops cannot afford to put all their eggs in the same basket. They should have alternative targets lined up. Askou is believed to be one of them. Roberto Martinez has been linked with the job as well, if he leaves the Portuguese national team after the World Cup. Don't be surprised if more names crop up between now and the end of the campaign.
