The contract lengths of a number of the Chelsea first team squad are well documented. We do not need to go into all of the details, but we know that several players have deals until well into the 2030's.
This is becoming more common across the Premier League. For example, Erling Haaland has a contract with Manchester City until 2034, shocking lots of people when it was announced.
However, despite the length of the contracts for the majority of Chelsea's first team, it appears some players are not content with their current situations, and want new and improved deals in SW6.
That is according to The Athletic, which is reporting that several senior players are "keen to negotiate improved terms" with the club. Chelsea sources claim this is natural and validates the club's size and ambition.
Furthermore, they report that one player recently turned down a new proposal, with a view to revisiting the situation once the 25/26 season is over. The player in question was not mentioned.
The article notes that South American midfielders Enzo Fernández and Moisés Caicedo are among the players seeking new contracts. At the moment, both players are on their initial contracts, signed in the winter and summer of 2023, respectively.
The Argentine has a deal until 2032, whilst his counterparts are contracted until 2031, with an option for a further 12 months. Both players have recently switched their agencies, which is worth keeping an eye on.
Interestingly, despite mentioning that one player recently turned down a new deal, The Athletic also reports that the club is "determined to maintain a policy" of not re-negotiating during the season. Does this mean that the player in question was worth pushing the boat out for? If so, it was far from ideal that he turned down the terms.
It will be very interesting to see what happens. You'd think these long term contracts would keep players happy enough. So maybe their issue is the current wages they are earning?
We saw Fernandez join from Benfica, whilst Caicedo joined from Brighton and Hove Albion. Thus, you can imagine that their current salary is not extraordinary. A basic wage at Chelsea would be a huge financial upgrade on either of those two clubs.
So now, after three years, perhaps they feel that their performances warrant a higher weekly wage. But we will see.
