Ronald De Boer has made a major statement about what Ajax could do in the final weeks of the transfer window.

Ajax NEED to sign a defensive midfielder this summer!More Videos

Ajax have shown a lot of ambition so far this summer as Jordi Cruijff aims to build a team that can win the Eredivisie title this season.

The signings of Julian Brandt and Marc ter Stegen, in particular, show the desire to win immediately, rather than a long-term project.

In addition to the German duo, Ajax have also signed Daley Blind on a free transfer from Girona, Caio Henrique from AS Monaco, Marcos Leonardo from Al Hilal and Toru Arokodare from Wolverhampton Wanderers on loan.

Ajax are now working to sign a defensive midfielder, with Edson Álvarez a top target. Should Mika Godts depart, a new left winger would also be on the agenda, with Noa Lang high on Ajax's shortlist. Ajax will also strengthen the defence, and are closing in on a deal to sign 19-year-old left-back Jofre Torrents from Barcelona. A new right-back is also on the agenda should Anton Gaaei leave, and a new right winger is also being targeted.

De Boer expects a big signing

Speaking to Ziggo Sport before Ajax's UEFA Conference League game against Shelbourne FC, Ronald de Boer reveals that he has heard Ajax will make at least one more big signing.

"They aren't done buying yet, because if I hear the rumours, there is still a very nice signing coming that will leave you speechless. I don't know who, but I am curious," De Boer said.

"I hear through the grapevine that at least one more big player is coming. Some players will have to go as well. Most of the focus will be on the number six position, I think," De Boer concluded.

A No. 6 should be the priority

Ajax will certainly need a new left winger should Godts leave, but a new defensive midfielder should be Ajax's main priority.

Youri Regeer has played there so far during UEFA Conference League qualifying, but Michel himself has admitted that Ajax need to sign a new No. 6 in the coming weeks.

The defensive midfield position has been problematic for quite a while now. Ajax signed James McConnell on loan from Liverpool last summer, but he played very little and returned to Anfield in January.

Ajax then made a serious attempt to sign Kodai Sano from NEC Nijmegen, but they refused to sell. Sano is now on the verge of signing for PSV Eindhoven, and Ajax did not return with an improved offer this summer for the Japanese midfielder.

It is time for Ajax to now seriously invest in the No. 6 position, and it would significantly boost their chances of winning the Eredivisie if they do.

Stije Resink would have been an ideal candidate. The FC Groningen midfielder is excellent both on and off the ball, but he suffered a serious injury a few months ago and will be out for a while, meaning he will stay in the north of the Netherlands this summer.

As mentioned previously, Álvarez is now a top target for Ajax, and the Mexican midfielder reportedly wants to return to Amsterdam, despite interest from other European clubs.
