Official international: Mauro Junior makes Brazil debut

PSV have officially added another Brazilian international to their history, with Mauro Junior making his senior debut for the Seleção against Australia on Friday.

The 27-year-old came off the bench in the 73rd minute, replacing Douglas Santos, as Brazil drew 1-1 with Australia at Queensland Country Bank Stadium in Townsville.

Brazil had fallen behind in the 68th minute when Nestory Irankunda converted from a free kick. Mauro was introduced shortly afterwards as Carlo Ancelotti looked to change the game.

The Brazilians eventually avoided defeat in stoppage time when Rayan scored the equaliser.

Ancelotti had already confirmed a day before the match that Mauro would not start, with the Brazil head coach announcing his lineup in advance. The PSV captain therefore began his international career from the bench before earning his first appearance.

Mauro could add to his tally during the current international break. Brazil will face Australia again next Tuesday before meeting India in a friendly next Saturday.

His debut also places Mauro among a select group of PSV players to have represented Brazil, following former Eindhoven stars such as Heurelho Gomes, Ronaldo and Romário.

After nine years with PSV, Mauro has now reached another milestone in his career, officially becoming a Brazilian international.
