Ruben van Bommel is reportedly in line for his first start for the Netherlands when Oranje face Greece on Thursday evening.

The PSV winger has made substitute appearances in the Netherlands’ last two internationals. He made an immediate impact on his debut against Germany, producing a superb assist for former PSV teammate Cody Gakpo in the 1-1 draw.

Gakpo is unavailable for the upcoming matches against Greece and Serbia through injury, opening the door for Van Bommel to step into the starting XI.

The PSV forward is expected to operate on the left wing, with AZ striker Mexx Meerdink leading the line and Crysencio Summerville on the right.

Xavi Hernandez is not expected to make changes in midfield. Joey Veerman should start alongside Ryan Gravenberch and Tijjani Reijnders.

There could, however, be another alteration in defence. Denzel Dumfries and Micky van de Ven are expected to continue as the full-backs, with Bart Verbruggen retaining his place in goal.

Jean-Paul van Hecke could make way for Jurriën Timber, who would partner captain Virgil van Dijk in central defence.

For Van Bommel, Thursday’s match could mark the next step in an impressive start to his international career.
